[Beng Fen (Clam Powder)]
Taste: Salty. Nature: Cold. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians, and the Foot Jueyin meridian. Functions: Specifically clears heat. Dries dampness and transforms phlegm. Resolves accumulation and brightens the eyes. For persistent cough that does not cease: To treat cough, spread the powder on a new tile and stir-fry until red. Add a small amount of Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis). Mix with light salt water and a few drops of Sesame Oil (Mayou), then take orally for miraculous effect. Beng Shui (Clam Water) functions specifically to relieve thirst and remove irritability.
[Xian Fen (Clam Shell Powder)]
Xian Rou (Clam Meat) has the same functions as clam. Soaking raw clam meat in water and using this water to wash scabbed chickenpox lesions prevents scarring. Xian Fen applied topically treats wet sores.
[Tian Luo (River Snail)]
Taste: Sweet, Salty. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Hand Taiyin and Foot Jueyin meridians. Functions: Specifically calms the heart and anchors the spirit. Descends phlegm and extracts toxins. Promotes wound closure and generates flesh. Treats fright-heat, chickenpox toxicity, and ding sores. Expels dead fetus and placenta. Applied to the eyes to remove nebula. Wrapped in cotton and inserted into the ear to treat deafness. Contraindicated in conditions not caused by fire-heat. Soak in milk for three days, grind to an extremely fine powder resembling flying flour, so as not to damage the zang-fu organs.
[Kui Ge (Geoduck/Clam variant)]
Taste: Salty. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Foot Jueyin meridian. Functions: Specifically clears heat and nourishes the liver. Combined with Gouqi (Lycium Fruit) and Juhua (Chrysanthemum Flower) to treat headache and blurred vision. Overconsumption causes coldness in the middle jiao. Incompatible with Xuanfu (Inula Flower).
[Wen Ge (Dark-shell Clam)]
Taste: Salty, Sweet. Nature: Cold. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Foot Shaoyin meridian. Functions: Specifically nourishes yin. Treats heat-dysentery. And postpartum deficiency-heat in women.
[Hai Ge (Sea Clam)]
Taste: Bitter, Salty. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Foot Shaoyin meridian. Functions: Specifically treats cough with rebellious qi. Combined with Huashi (Talcum), Gancao (Licorice Root), and Mangxiao (Mirabilite) to treat blood stasis resulting from Shanghan (Cold Damage).
[Che Ao (Ark Shell)]
Taste: Sweet, Salty. Nature: Neutral. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Foot Jueyin meridian. Functions: Specifically resolves old phlegm. Breaks up blood biopathies. Calcined and quenched with vinegar, formed into pills with vinegar. Treats all types of pathogenic masses caused by blood, qi, and cold air. Also known as Kui Ge.
[Zhu Cai (Snail variant)]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Warm. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Hand Taiyin and Yangming meridians. Functions: Specifically treats consumptive disease and exhaustion. Hematemesis and dysentery. Borborygmus and lower back pain. Leukorrhea in women. Postpartum emaciation. And resolves goiter qi. Also known as Zhu Cai.
[Tian Luo (River Snail - Continued)]
Taste: Sweet. Nature: Very Cold. Meridian Tropism: Enters the Hand and Foot Taiyin, Yangming, and Jueyin meridians. Functions: Specifically promotes diuresis and clears heat. Relieves thirst and awakens from intoxication. Promotes urination and defecation. For abdominal distension with large abdomen and obstruction of urination/defecation: Take a small amount of salt, mash with snail meat, tie with a cloth strip 1 cun 3 fen below the umbilicus; distension will resolve immediately. If treating Hongxiangjiao (Gouty Arthritis/Foot Rot), tie it to both thighs; if cold qi descends to the feet, it will heal. Applying to the eyes treats redness effectively. Grind the shell, mix with oil, and apply to hemorrhoids, body odor, and ulcerated Luoli (Scrofula). Use snail meat mixed with a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), pound into a cake, warm it, and apply to the lower abdomen to treat Huangdan (Jaundice) and Jinkou Duli (Throat-locking Toxic Dysentery).
