Yang-rising. Sweet and neutral in flavor. Suitable for decocting herbs that treat insufficient middle qi and failure of clear yang to ascend.
Yang-rising. Sweet and neutral in flavor. Suitable for decocting dispersing and spleen-strengthening Qi-tonifying herbs, and for soaking to prepare pills and electuaries treating various wind pathogens and spleen-stomach deficiency syndromes.
(Rainwater) damages beans, wheat, and mulberry leaves; preparing various medicinal materials and foods becomes prone to spoilage. Drinking this water also causes spleen-stomach diseases. Saline Rain (Rain falling on the first Gui day after the Xiaoman solar term is called Saline Rain, with particularly severe toxicity).
(Saline Rain) has strong toxicity, possessing consuming and attacking properties. Washing sores and scabies with it removes scars. Adding it to soy sauce makes it cook faster. However, it cannot be used to brew wine or vinegar. (Plum or refers to mold; if clothes and bedding get moldy, washing them with a decoction of plum leaves removes the mold).
(Saline Rain) is suitable for preparing pills and electuaries treating malaria, dysentery, sores, ulcers, traumatic injuries, and venom from hundred insects. Using it to decoct anti-demonic and insect-killing drugs yields especially miraculous effects.
(Sweet and Cold). Mixed with otter liver to form pills, treating abdominal masses and parasitic diseases. Decocting and drinking this water alone can clear heat, resolve phlegm, calm fright, and tranquilize the mind. (Rainwater at noon on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, specifically the water inside cut bamboo, is this). All the aforementioned rainwaters can assist dampness.
(Dew) moistens the lungs. Suitable for decocting herbs that regulate lung qi descent.
(Hanlu Rain) damages rice crops, similar to Xiaoman rain. (Yan Yun: Hanlu rain steals rice like ghosts).
(Xiaoxue Rain) drains heat. For those with excess yang qi, using this water for decoction is appropriate.
(Xiaoxue Rain) is suitable for decocting insect-killing and accumulation-resolving herbs. (Rain falling from ten days after Lidong until Xiaoxue is called "Ye" rain). Insects drink this water and enter hibernation; when spring thunder sounds, the hibernating insects emerge.
(Ye Rain) drains heat. Suitable for soaking to prepare pills and electuaries nourishing the five zang organs, as well as treating phlegm-fire, spirit aggregation, and insect poison syndromes. Also suitable for brewing medicinal wines. Its efficacy is the same as snow water.
(Clear Water). Sweet and cold in flavor. Mainly treats improving vision, calming the heart, relieving thirst, and removing childhood irritant heat. (The *Rites of Zhou* mentions Si Shi using Fu Sui to obtain bright fire from the sun mirror, and Fang Zhu to obtain clear water from the moon mirror, for sacrificial purposes. These mirrors are made of metal. Casting Yang Sui, also known as Yang Fu, occurs at noon on Bing Wu day in Wu month; casting Yin Sui, also known as Yin Fu or Fang Zhu, occurs at midnight on Ren Zi day in Zi month).
(Autumn Dew). Sweet and neutral in flavor. Relieves excessive thirst. Suitable for decocting lung-moistening herbs. Wine brewed with autumn dew is the clearest and coldest. Dew from hundreds of flowers improves complexion. (Dew clears summer heat, so when Bailu descends, Chushu ends. Since malaria often stems from summer heat, antimalarial herbs soaked in dew overnight are effective).
