或问百合能止喘。百合非止喘之药也,但能消痞满耳。喘生于痞满,痞满消而喘胀除,

Lily Bulb (Baihe), sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Lung, Spleen, and Heart meridians. It calms the mind and benefits the will, resolves pathogenic factors causing palpitations, mania, and screaming, dissipates Qi stagnation leading to edema and fullness, stops generalized body pain, promotes urination and defecation, expels ghostly Qi and epidemic pathogens, eliminates cough and rebellious Qi, kills parasites and toxins, treats carbuncles, furuncles, breast swelling, and throat obstruction, and also manages complicated syndromes resulting from cold damage (Shanghan). It simultaneously tonifies the Middle Jiao and benefits Qi. This herb is mild and harmonious, possessing the merit of resolving discord; it supports weakness while subduing excess, dispels evil, and assists righteous Qi. However, its aroma and flavor are very thin; heavy dosage is required for doubled efficacy. Thus, Lily Bulb can serve as both a Sovereign drug (Jun) and an Assistant/Envoy drug (Zuo-Shi), with dosages reaching 1-2 liang (approx. 30-60g). If only a few qian (approx. 3-9g) are used, how can it calm mania, stop pain, drive away ghosts, or eliminate abscesses? When used to calm the mind, benefit the will, and tonify the Middle, it should be administered together with Ginseng Radix (Renshen) and Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome (Baizhu), in which case large doses are unnecessary.
Someone asked: "Can Lily Bulb stop asthma?" Lily Bulb is not a specific anti-asthmatic herb; rather, it dissipates fullness. Asthma arises from fullness; when fullness is resolved, asthmatic distension is eliminated. Therefore, mentioning the treatment of fullness implies the treatment of asthma within it.
Someone asked: "In the Cold Damage category, there is a 'Lily Disease' specifically treated with Lily Decoction. Why do you not mention this?" I reply: The 'Lily Disease' in the Cold Damage section refers to a complicated syndrome that is about to form. Mentioning complicated syndromes includes Lily Bulb. Why use Lily Bulb for complicated syndromes? Precisely because of its mild and harmonious nature, it resolves the chaos in various meridians and stabilizes their disturbances. While Lily Bulb has the merit of resolving discord, for changes caused by Cold Damage, it must be assisted by other herbs and cannot rely solely on Lily Bulb.
Inula Flower (Xuanfuhua), sour and sweet in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. Another view states: cold and purgative, slightly toxic. This is incorrect. Enters the Heart, Liver, Large Intestine, and Small Intestine meridians. It treats cephalalgia due to wind, brightens the eyes, drives out water retention, promotes bowel movement, removes epigastric fullness, belching, and hard masses, dissipates phlegm-fluids knotted in the chest, calms fright and strange phenomena, and stops alternating chills and fever. This herb embodies the image of rotating heaven and earth; for any rebellious Qi, it can restore tranquility. However, it should be used only once and not repeatedly. For individuals with extreme deficiency, it is especially inadvisable to use lightly.
Someone asked: "Inula Flower is extremely effective for rebellious Qi and is a key herb for Cold Damage. Is it unknown whether it treats conditions outside of Cold Damage?" I reply: Rebellious Qi syndromes are not limited to Cold Damage; Inula Flower's ability to treat rebellious Qi shows particular wonder in miscellaneous diseases. However, for rebellious Qi caused by Cold Damage, Ginseng Radix need not be added. For rebellious Qi in miscellaneous disease categories, Ginseng Radix is indispensable for efficacy, so they must be used together.
Someone asked: "Is it true that Inula Flower cannot achieve miraculous results when used alone?" Indeed, Inula Flower cannot be used alone. Combined with Hematitum (Daizheshi), it can exert its rotating effect. For rebellious Qi that fails to rotate, these must be used; upon ingestion, the Qi immediately turns. These two herbs not only move Qi but also stabilize it. When combined with Ginseng Radix, the effect is particularly remarkable.
Someone asked: "It is said that Inula Flower is a dispersing herb. Is this true?" I reply: Inula Flower excels at turning Qi, not dispersing it. Therefore, patients with rebellious Qi find their Qi smoothed by it. Would those whose Qi is already smooth use it to disperse it further?
