Use after removing the rootlets and the rhizome head (Lu Tou).
Sweet, bitter, pungent, neutral in nature, slightly cold. It is a herb for the Hand and Foot Yangming and Taiyin meridians. It disperses wind pathogens and raises fire stagnation. It benefits the throat and stops pain, reduces swelling and toxicity, and drains pus and blood. It resolves the toxicity of macules, rashes, sores, and smallpox; it lifts sinking conditions such as rectal prolapse, diarrhea, metrorrhagia, and leukorrhea. It also repels epidemic pestilence and miasma, and is most effective in resolving gu poison and drug toxicity. It is contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with hyperactive fire.
It is found in Shuhan, Shaanxi, and Huainan, with those from Sichuan being superior. The leaves resemble hemp leaves and are green; flowers appear in April and May, resembling millet spikes, white in color.
Seeds mature in June and July, black in color. The roots resemble mugwort roots, purple-black in color, with many rootlets. Harvested in February or August.
Epidemic macular toxin: During the reign of Emperor Yuan of Jin, this condition spread from the west, named "Barbarian Sore" (Lu Chuang). Macules appeared on the body and face, spreading rapidly over the whole body within moments. The lesions resembled burns, topped with white pustules. They ruptured and regenerated continuously. Without treatment, death would occur within days. After recovery, the spots persisted for over a year. This was caused by malignant toxic qi. Boiled Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) with honey should be consumed frequently, and the area should be washed with cotton soaked in boiled Shengma decoction. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
Sudden onset of swelling and toxicity: Grind Shengma with vinegar and apply externally. (No. 2.)
Throat obstruction with pain: Hold in the mouth and swallow the juice. (No. 3.)
Stomach fire toothache: Decoct and use for gargling before swallowing. (No. 4.)
Oral and lingual ulcers: Use one qian of Shengma and three fen of Huanglian, grind into powder, wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth, and swallow. (No. 5.)
Heat miliaria with itching: Take internally and wash externally. (No. 6.)
Hematuria in infants: Decoct in water and take orally. (No. 7.)
Persistent lochia: Whether lasting a month or half a year, decoct three liang with wine and take. It induces vomiting and purging of evil substances, which is highly effective. (No. 8.)
Resolve Datura toxicity: Decoct in water and take in large amounts. (No. 9.)
Shexiang stream toxicity: Decoct together with Shegan (Radix Belamcandae) and take. (No. 10.)
Shengma Biejia Tang (Cimicifuga and Turtle Shell Decoction): Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Xionghuang (Realgar), Shujiao (Fructus Zanthoxyli).
Decoct in water and take orally. Treats red face, macules appearing like brocade patterns, sore throat, and expectoration of pus and blood; this is Yang Du (Yang Toxicity). (Formulas No. 1.)
Another formula: Shengma, Biejia, Gancao, Danggui. Treats blue-green complexion, body pain as if beaten by a staff, and sore throat; this is Yin Du (Yin Toxicity). (No. 2.)
