Soak in rice washing water, steam until cooked, then sun-dry for use. It acts as a guiding herb with Scrophulariae Radix (Xuanshen, 玄参). It is incompatible with Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, 菟丝子), and Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba (Loulu, 漏芦); it is chemically antagonistic to Veratrum Rhizoma (Lilu, 藜芦). This refers to the root of Sophora flavescens (Kushen, 苦参), also known as wild locust root.
Bitter in taste, cold in nature, non-toxic, with a sinking property. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian, Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian, and Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. It tonifies Yin and benefits essence, brightens the eyes, and stops tearing. It treats bloody dysentery caused by damp-heat, and arrests bloody diarrhea due to intestinal wind pathogens. It also treats leprosy, scabies, and other severe skin diseases; it is particularly effective in eliminating carbuncles, sores, and genital ulcers. It addresses conditions such as dark urine, jaundice, and abdominal masses (Jiju Zhengjia, 积聚症瘕 - accumulations and masses). It clears heat from the Wood element (Liver) and expels parasites; it promotes urination through the Water element (Kidney/Bladder) and drains heat. It should not be used for patients with Liver and Kidney deficiency without heat signs. It grows abundantly in various regions nearby. Its leaves resemble those of the locust tree.
