**Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex)**
Bitter, cold, slightly salty, non-toxic, drying in nature. It enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian, and also connects to the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. It eliminates all types of wind-bi syndrome (painful obstruction due to wind) and treats various forms of Huangdan (jaundice). It is used for vulvar swelling in women, infantile convulsions, atrophy/necrosis of muscles in both legs, and weakness of tendons in the four limbs. It treats epidemic diseases presenting with headache and eye pain, as well as chronic skin conditions such as wind sores, scabies, and leprosy.
*(Verification Formula 1: For a ruptured shu-lou [scrofula/abscess] discharging pus and blood, decoct Bai Xian Pi and take orally; it may induce vomiting of material resembling a small mouse.)*
For postpartum wind-stroke, if the patient is too deficient to tolerate other medicines, use solely Bai Xian Pi, decocted in fresh water. *(Formula 2)*
It grows in Shanggu and Yanzhou areas. Harvested in February. Currently found in Hezhong, Jiangning, Chuzhou, and Runzhou, with those from Shu (Sichuan) considered superior. The herb has stems over one chi tall, green in color; leaves are slightly white, resembling Sophora leaves or Euodia leaves. It bears pale purple flowers in April. The root resembles small Vitex fruit, with yellowish-white bark and solid pith.
Use after stir-frying. Originally named Xuanhusuo. In the Song Dynasty, to avoid the personal name taboo of Emperor Zhenzong (Zhao Heng), "Xuan" was changed to "Yan". Later, to avoid ancestral temple taboos, "Xuan" was changed to "Yuan".
**Yan Hu Suo / Yuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizome)**
Acrid, sweet, bitter, warm, non-toxic, floating in nature. It enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian, Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It treats qi stagnation pain, and is most effective for blood stasis and coagulation, abdominal masses, and umbilical hernia pain. It regulates menstruation in women, treating menstrual stasis and obstruction, and eliminates postpartum blood accumulation, syncope due to blood loss, and blood rushing upward. It dispels wind, regulates qi, and stops sudden pain in the waist and knees. It invigorates blood, stops pain, and relieves sudden urinary retention. It holds the authority over moving blood and promoting qi circulation, and possesses the ability to unblock meridians and induce abortion. It should not be used by patients with blood heat and qi deficiency.
It grows in Xi State. The root resembles Pinellia ternata, yellow in color. Currently cultivated in Longdong on the upper slopes of Ermao Mountain. Planted after Cold Dew, sprouting after Start of Spring. Leaves resemble bamboo leaves, standing erect.
