Soak in wine and bake before use; those with bright color are of superior quality.
Sweet, neutral, slightly warm, non-toxic. Enters the Jueyin Liver meridian. Treats various wind-damp bi syndromes (painful obstruction caused by wind and dampness), stiffness and spasms of the four limbs; cures numbness due to wind-heat, and speech impediment. It is an excellent remedy for wind epilepsy (Feng Xian) and palpitations due to fright, and a miraculous pill for dizziness and headache. Contraindicated for those with blood deficiency and stroke-like syndromes.
Grows in plains and marshes. The stem resembles *Verbena officinalis* (Ma Bian Cao), producing purple flowers at each node, with seeds inside the flowers resembling *Xiang Zi*. It resembles Yu Feng Cao (Atractylodes lancea or similar herb), but differs in stem and leaves. The rhizome has spots, and the back of the leaves has green dots; this is Yu Feng Cao.
For black vision and dizziness, take together with Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong). (Verified Formula No. 1.)

Sweet, warm, bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians. Dries dampness and tonifies the spleen, warms the middle and harmonizes the stomach, generates fluids and relieves thirst, stops vomiting and diarrhea. Promotes appetite, dispels fatigue, resolves phlegm and fluid retention, clears heat from the skin. Paired with Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) to calm the fetus; assisted by Immature Bitter Orange (Zhishi) to dissipate clumps. Contraindicated for those with dry blood and no dampness; contraindicated after ulceration of sores, as it promotes pus formation and pain.
Found everywhere, but those from Maoshan, Songshan, Jiangshan, and Baishan are of superior quality. Currently grown on hillsides in Hangzhou, Yuezhou, Shuzhou, and Xuanzhou. Leaves grow opposite each other, hairy on top. Square stems, flowers at the stem tips in pale purple, green, and red hues; roots grow in forks. Large pieces with purple flowers and root shapes resembling "cloud heads" are best. Ancient formulas used Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). In ancient times, Cang Zhu and Bai Zhu were not distinguished. Nowadays, many merchants coat them with rice flour to make them white, which is unnatural; the coating should be scraped off.
