[Pai Cao Xiang]
Pungent in flavor, warm in nature, non-toxic. It repels foul odors and dispels evil qi. Its fragrance is intense like Moschus (Shexiang), surpassing all other aromatic herbs.
Originates from Jiaozhi (modern-day northern Vietnam). It is the root of a plant, white in color, resembling thin willow roots, with an intense fragrance like Moschus; it is often adulterated by people.
[Huo Xiang]
Pungent and sweet in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. It eliminates foul odors and stabilizes Huoluan (Cholera-like syndrome). It resolves pain in the heart and abdomen, and stops vomiting and regurgitation of the spleen and stomach.
It warms the middle jiao, promotes the movement of qi, opens the stomach, and stimulates appetite.
Originates from overseas countries; currently abundant in the Lingnan region, and also widely cultivated. Seedlings emerge in February; the stem is square with nodes, hollow inside, and leaves resemble those of eggplant. Physicians such as Jiegu and Dongyuan used only the leaves, not the stems.
Currently, people use both the stalks and stems because the leaves are prone to adulteration. Harvested in July.
For severe Huoluan nearing death, administer together with Chenpi (Tangerine Peel). (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For vomiting and diarrhea during summer heat, administer with powder of Huashi (Talcum) using rice washing water. (No. 2.)
For sour vomiting before childbirth, administer with powder of Gancao (Licorice Root). (No. 3.)
To remove bad breath, decoct for mouth rinsing. (No. 4.)
For cold-dew sores that have ulcerated, mix fine tea ash with sesame oil and apply externally. (No. 5.)
Huoxiang Zhengqi San (Agastache Powder to Regulate the Qi and Rectify the Middle): Composed of Huoxiang, Ziye, Yunling, Baizhi, Binglang, Nongpu, Chenpi, Jiegeng, Banxia, Zhigancao, Shengjiang, Dazao.
Decoct in water. Treats pathogenic factors of the four seasons, internal stagnation of food, headache with chills and fever, Huoluan with vomiting and diarrhea, or malaria. (First among various formulas.)
Dry in the wind using a silk bag. Fangji (Stephania Root) serves as the guiding herb.
[Zelan]
Sweet and bitter in flavor, slightly warm in nature, non-toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. It treats various gynecological diseases and eliminates postpartum syndromes. It benefits orifices and unblocks collaterals, nourishes blood and tonifies qi, dispels phlegm and resolves masses, and promotes flesh regeneration. It stops hematemesis and epistaxis while clearing head wind, reduces carbuncles, and treats traumatic injuries. It treats wasting-thirst due to labor in women, and sallow complexion in men.
Grows in marshes around Runan; currently found everywhere, mostly near low-lying waters. Leaves resemble orchids; seedlings emerge in February, with red nodes. Four leaves grow opposite each other at the nodes.
For various swellings after childbirth, administer with powder of Fangji using wine. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For initial stage of carbuncle swelling, crush and apply externally. (No. 2.)
For traumatic injury with blood stasis and swelling. Use the same method. (No. 3.)
For postpartum uterine prolapse, decoct four liang, add Kufan (Alum), and fumigate/wash. (No. 4.)
