With Adzuki Bean (Chi Xiao Dou) as the guiding herb, it is incompatible with Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Shan Yao). It is also known as "Cat's Eye Grass."
Acrid, bitter, slightly cold, non-toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. Eliminates phlegm, reduces fever, stops coughing, and kills parasites. Resolves abdominal distension and edema, promotes urination and defecation, and moves water-dampness.
It grows abundantly in rivers, lakes, plains, and marshes. The stem branches into clusters; the stems are tender and leaves are green. The leaves are round and yellowish-green, resembling cat eyes. At the tip of the stem, five leaves typically diverge, from which five small stalks emerge centrally. Each stalk bears tiny bluish-green flowers supported by small bracts, arranged neatly. The stems exude a white, sticky latex. Some mistakenly identify this plant as the seedling of Euphorbia pekinensis (Da Ji), which is incorrect.
For latent masses under the heart that obstruct eating like a cup: Combine with Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (Da Huang) and Lepidii Semen (Ting Li Zi), form honey pills, and take orally. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For ten types of water-qi disorders: Decoct into an electuary, take with wine. (No. 2.)
Zeqi Tang (Ze Qi Decoction): Ze Ye Euphorbiae Herba (Ze Qi, 10 parts), Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Ban Xia, 10 parts), Cistanchis Caulis (Bai Qian, 3 parts), Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin, 2 parts), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen, 2 parts), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao, 2 parts), Asteris Radix (Zi Wan, 2 parts), Cinnamomi Ramulus (Gui Zhi, 2 parts), Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Sheng Jiang, 3 parts).
Treats coughing with a deep pulse. (First among various formulas.)
Gansui: Baked in old bread before use. With Cucumeris Fructus (Gua Di) as the guiding herb, incompatible with Polygalae Radix (Yuan Zhi), and antagonistic to Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao).
Bitter, cold, toxic. Enters the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Channel. Removes abdominal fullness and swelling, reduces facial and ocular edema, resolves scrotal swelling and heaviness, and applies to swollen nodules of Hong Kong foot (gouty arthritis/edema of lower limbs). Effective for retained fluid and stale food stagnation, hard masses and accumulations, phlegm-misting epilepsy, and dysphagia with chest obstruction. Contraindicated in deficient persons.
Grows in Zhongshan area; roots harvested in the second and eighth lunar months. Also found in Shaanxi and Jiangdong. The foliage resembles Ze Ye Euphorbiae Herba (Ze Qi); stems are short with sap-filled leaves. Roots have red skin and white flesh, appearing bead-like (moniliform), though some are white.
For edema and abdominal fullness: Combine with Black Morning Glory Seed (Hei Chou/Qian Niu Zi), powder them, decoct in water, and sip frequently. (Verified Formula No. 1.)
For severe swelling of body and face: Powder the root, insert into pig kidney, bake until cooked, and eat. Take three times daily. (No. 2.)
For swelling and pain of four limbs, with spasms and stiffness of legs and knees: Add Costi Radix (Mu Xiang) to the above formula. (No. 3.)
For edema with panting and urgency, and constipation: Combine with Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix (Da Ji) and Genkwa Flos (Yuan Hua), powder them, form pills with jujube pulp, and take orally. (No. 4.)
For complete retention of urine and feces: Powder the root, mix with flour, apply to the umbilicus and Dantian acupoint. Moxibustion on three cones. Internally administer Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) decoction. Continue until unblocking occurs. (No. 5.)
For unilateral hernia (Pian Zhui): Combine with Foeniculi Fructus (Hui Xiang) powder, take with wine. (No. 6.)
For numbness and pain: Gansui Radix (Gan Sui) 2 liang, Ricini Semen (Bi Ma Zi) 4 liang, Camphora (Zhang Nao) 1 liang. Pound into a paste for external application. Internally drink Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) water. (No. 7.)
For sudden deafness: Gansui Radix (Gan Sui) 0.5 liang, wrap in cotton, insert into the ear. Chew Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao) in the mouth. (No. 8.)
Gansui Banxia Tang (Gan Sui and Pinellia Decoction): Gansui Radix (Gan Sui), Pinelliae Rhizoma (Ban Xia), Paeoniae Radix Alba (Bai Shao), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao).
Decoct with honey and water. Treats hardness and fullness below the heart with water accumulation, hidden/deep pulse, where spontaneous diarrhea brings relief. (First among various formulas.)
Suixin Dan (Heart-Penetrating Pill): Gansui Radix powder (2 qian).
Mix with pig heart blood, place inside a pig heart, bake until cooked. Remove and powder. Add Cinnabar (Chen Sha) 1 qian. Divide into four pills. Take one pill each time with pig heart decoction. Effectiveness is indicated by the discharge of foul matter from stool. If not discharged, repeat administration. (No. 2.)
