Originates from Jiaozhi and Yuanju. Bark is harvested in the third, ninth, and tenth lunar months. Found in valleys of Luoyang, Shaanxi, Hunan, Jianghuai, and Shu regions. Trees are three to four zhang high, evergreen, bearing red flowers and green fruits. The bark is extremely scaly/wrinkled; those with thick flesh, purple color, and pungent taste are superior. Currently produced in Yiyang and Shangzhou, but these are thinner and paler, lacking the thickness, purple hue, and oily texture of those from Zizhou. A modern variety resembles it closely but lacks the characteristic aroma and flavor; its botanical identity is unknown.
