[Hutong Lei (Tamarix Gum)]
Salty, bitter, cold, non-toxic. Resolves severe toxic heat and softens various hard masses. Treats wind-induced toothache and worm-induced toothache; eliminates fire toxin and facial toxin. Expels vexation and fullness from the heart and abdomen; clears heat pain in the throat and pharynx; cures bone cavity wind-lao (chronic inflammation/ulceration); treats wind-gum disease of the teeth.
Produced in the flat marshes and valleys west of Suzhou. Shape resembles Huangfan (Yellow Alum) but is solid and firm. Some contain rotting wood, said to be resin from Hutong trees that has seeped into earth and stone areas with alkaline/saline properties, associated with Poplar, Qingtong, Mulberry, etc. The ones with an earthy yellow color are superior. There is a distinction between "Wood Tear" and "Stone Tear." Wood tear is exuded resin, resembling ointment or oil. Stone tear is lipid that has entered between earth and stones, forming lumps. Because it obtains the qi of alkaline repulsion, for medicinal use, Stone Tear is considered superior.
Used after honey-frying. Averse to Dry Lacquer (Ganqi); Sulfur can control/subdue it.
