Soak in wine before use. Raw usage directs the action downward, while roasted usage provides tonification. It is incompatible with *Baiqian* (Adenophorae Radix) and beef should be avoided.
Acidic and bitter in taste, non-toxic. Enters the Kidney and Liver meridians. Tonifies the Liver and Kidneys, benefits the sinews and bones, expels evil blood, and breaks up masses. Strengthens the feet, replenishes essence, and treats excess pain in the lower back and knees; dispels dampness, resolves bi-syndrome, and extends sinews and bones to relieve contracture. It is a formula for treating strangury pain and hematuria, and a medicine for treating throat obstruction and toothache. It cures carbuncles, sores, and malignant ulcers, and heals metallic wounds and fractures. It holds the power to unblock menstruation and induce abortion, and excels in tonifying the center and reconnecting severed tissues. Combined with *Ruxiang* (Frankincense), it stops pain in the glans penis; it guides other herbs to the area of the feet and knees.
It is found everywhere, but those cultivated by households in Sichuan are considered superior. The stem is square with distinct nodes, and leaves grow oppositely. Flowers bloom in autumn, forming spikes that bear seeds resembling mice carrying insects, covered with prickly hairs that grow inverted along the stem. Roots are harvested in September. During the Song Dynasty, those from Huaqing were deemed the best.
For unceasing xiao-ke (wasting-thirst), grind five liang into powder, soak in juice of *Shengdi Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix), sun-dry during the day and soak at night, then form into honeyed pills. (Verified Formula 1.)
For dysentery presenting first with blood and then with mucus, this is chang-gu (intestinal parasite/disease). Soak two liang in wine, take one liang per dose. (Formula 2.)
For blood clumps in women, decoct in wine and take. (Formula 3.)
For vulvar pain in women, decoct one liang in wine and take per dose. (Formula 4.)
For retained placenta, use two liang of Niuxi and one liang of Dongkuizi (Malvae Semen), decoct in water and take; after three doses, the placenta will be expelled. (Formula 5.)
For hematuria postpartum, decoct in water and take regularly. (Formula 6.)
For oral and lingual ulcers, soak in wine for gargling or decoct and take. (Formula 7.)
For toothache, decoct, grind into powder, and rinse mouth. (Formula 8.)
For pain from metallic wounds, crush and apply topically for immediate relief. (Formula 9.)
For sudden onset of malignant ulcers unrecognized by others, crush and apply topically. (Formula 10.)
For wind-induced pruritus and urticaria [text missing], grind into powder and take with wine. (Formula 11.)
Wanbing Wan (Ten-Thousand-Disease Pill): Soak Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) in wine overnight, roast, and grind into powder; roast Ganxi (Dry Knee/Root) until smoke ceases. Use juice of *Shengdi Huang* (Rehmanniae Radix) to decoct and bind into pills the size of beans. Take five pills per dose. Treats menstrual strangury and amenorrhea. Also treats peri-umbilical hernia pain. Also treats postpartum masses. (First of Various Formulas.)
