(Sheng Dihuang / Raw Rehmanniae Radix) pairs well with Jiu (Alcohol/Wine) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix). It is incompatible with Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) and fears Wuyi (Myrobalanus Chebulae Fructus).
Sweet, cold, slightly bitter, non-toxic. Enters the Taiyin Spleen meridian, Jueyin Liver meridian, and the Hand-Foot Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians. Cools blood and nourishes the liver, clears wind and moistens the wood (liver), eliminates stasis and unblocks menstruation, moistens dryness and resolves accumulation. Resolves excessive yang in warm diseases, reduces intense heat in smallpox/variolous eruptions. Removes cough caused by fire agitation, regulates blood heat in metrorrhagia. Treats hematuria, spitting of blood, vomiting of blood, and epistaxis; palpitations, flaccidity syndromes, and bi-syndromes [Note: Original text has a gap after "of"]. Fills the marrow and grows muscles, stabilizes fractures and reconnects severed tendons. Most damaging to the spleen and stomach, especially purges the large intestine.
Found everywhere, those from Huaqing have strong efficacy, while those from Jiangzhe have weak efficacy. Initially grows flat on the ground, leaves resemble wild cabbage but are hairy and rough, leaf surface is deep green, and lobed. Stems sprout from among the leaves, covered with fine hairs. Small tubular yellow-red flowers bloom at the stem tips, fruits resemble wheat grains.
(Ru Dihuang / Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) is best when washed with wine. Avoid radish (Lafu), scallion, garlic, and all blood products.
Sweet, neutral, non-toxic. Enters the Hand-Foot Shaoyin and Jueyin meridians. Nourishes kidney yin, fills marrow and generates essence, darkens beard and hair, sharpens hearing and brightens eyes.
Select thick Rehmannia roots, wash clean, discard thin and short ones, crush and squeeze out juice, pour into stone vessels to soak and filter, steam multiple times in a steamer until glossy black like lacquer. Recent methods involve mixing in powder of Amomi Fructus (Sharen), stirring well, placing in willow-wood steamers, and steaming/drying multiple times. Currently in the province, it is simply cooked ripe with wine.
