[Aromatic Herbs] Dry the spleen, warm the stomach, and astringe the intestines.
Myristicae Semen (Nutmeg) (Primarily enters the Spleen and Stomach meridians, and also the Large Intestine meridian). Pungent, warm, aromatic in odor, with bitter and astringent tastes. Its function is specialized in drying the spleen, warming the stomach, and astringing the intestines to stop diarrhea. (Li Shizhen said: Earth loves warmth and delights in fragrance. Therefore, the pungent and warm nature of Nutmeg regulates the Spleen and Stomach and treats vomiting and diarrhea.) It moves stagnation, treats abdominal distension, and reduces swelling. In cases of Spleen and Stomach deficiency-cold complicated by phlegm and food retention, presenting with cold pain in the heart and abdomen and continuous diarrhea, taking this warm-natured herb can both dispel cold and reduce distension, and also astringe the intestines to stop dysentery. If used together with Psoraleae Fructus (Psoralea Fruit), it can stop diarrhea caused by Kidney deficiency. Regarding the claim in texts that it tonifies Spleen Qi, this is because when Spleen and Stomach are deficient and cold, taking this herb warms them so the Spleen becomes robust naturally; it does not truly possess the meaning of sweet tonification. For rebellious Qi, taking it causes Qi to descend because once the Spleen and Stomach Qi mechanism is smooth, Qi descends naturally; it is not as drastic in descending Qi as Magnoliae Officinalis Fructus (Magnolia Bark) or Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Immature Bitter Orange). However, this belongs only to herbs that warm the stomach and astringe the intestines. It is contraindicated for acute profuse watery diarrhea due to constrained heat. It originates from Lingnan, resembling Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus (Round Cardamom), with wrinkles on the outside and mottled patterns inside. It is cooked熟 (cooked thoroughly) wrapped in glutinous rice flour, then the oil is removed before use. Avoid contact with iron.
[Aromatic Herbs] Warm the Kidney, drive out cold, regulate Qi, and secure collapse.
Psoraleae Fructus (Psoralea Fruit) (Also known as Po Gu Zhi, primarily enters the Kidney meridian). Bitter, pungent, greatly warm, black in color. Many texts record that it can gather the Shen (Spirit), allowing the Fire of the Pericardium to connect with the Fire of the Mingmen (Gate of Life), thereby strengthening Yuan Yang (Original Yang) and filling the marrow. This is because its nature is warm and taste bitter, using its astringent property to prevent sliding/loss. (Li Shizhen said: According to Bai Feixia's "Fang Wai Qi Fang" (Extraordinary Prescriptions Outside the Medical Canon), Po Gu Zhi belongs to Fire and gathers the Shen, enabling the Fire of the Pericardium to connect with the Fire of the Mingmen, thus strengthening Yuan Yang and filling the marrow, using astringency to prevent loss. Walnut belongs to Wood, moistens dryness and nourishes Blood. Blood belongs to Yin and dislikes dryness, so oil is used to moisten it. Assisting Po Gu Zhi, it creates the wonder of mutual generation of Water and Fire. Hence the saying: Without Walnut, Po Gu Zhi is like a jellyfish without a shrimp.) In cases of Wu Lao (Five Exhaustions: Zhi Lao, Xin Lao, Si Lao, You Lao, Shou Lao) and Qi Shang (Seven Injuries: Yin Cold, Impotence, Internal Urgency with Essence Depletion, Scanty Essence, Clear Essence, Lower Jiao Dampness with Frequent Urination, Failure during Intercourse) due to Fire Decline, presenting with cold pain in the waist and knees, Cold Kidney with flowing essence, Kidney Deficiency diarrhea, and in women with Kidney Deficiency leading to slippery fetus (threatened miscarriage), using this herb is most appropriate. (Xu Shimwei in "Ben Shi Fang" said: Tonifying the Spleen is不如 inferior to Tonifying the Kidney. When Kidney Qi is weak, Yang Qi declines and fails to steam the Spleen and Stomach, causing Spleen and Stomach Qi to be cold, leading to chest and diaphragm fullness, poor appetite, slow digestion, or empty distension in the abdomen and ribs, or vomiting of phlegm-saliva, or borborygmus and diarrhea. This is like food in a pot without fire; even if boiled all day, it will not cook, let alone digest. Ji Sheng Er Shen Wan uses Po Gu Zhi to tonify the Kidney and Myristicae Semen to tonify the Spleen. Although these two herbs have tonifying effects, they lack the ability to pivot/midway regulate Qi. Often, Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix) is added to smooth Qi and enable pivoting. Just as an empty granary can receive goods, once the granary is emptied, it can accept new items. It has been effective repeatedly; one must know this.) If the syndrome is not identified correctly, and fetal abortion occurs due to Qi sinking and shortness of breath (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma and Astragali Radix should be used), or seminal emission and diarrhea occur due to Water Decline and Fire Excess (moistening methods combined with clearing and draining should be used), recklessly using Psoraleae Fructus to astringe and stop loss would kill more cruelly than sharp weapons. Stir-fry with salt water; works well with Sesami Nigri Semen (Black Sesame Seed). Adverse reaction with Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Licorice Root).
