中第八方最为合宜。
Papaveris Semen (Poppy Seed) mainly treats the expulsion of wind pathogens and clearance of pathogenic heat. It is used for chest phlegm stagnation and regurgitation caused by poisoning from mineral drugs (Dan Shi). Papaveris Pericarpium (Poppy Shell) mainly astringes the intestines, consolidates the lungs, secures the kidneys, treats chronic cough, diarrhea and dysentery, seminal emission, and various pains in the heart, abdomen, sinews, and bones.
Papaveri Porridge: Take 3 he of white Papaveris Semen, 3 qian of Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen), and 5 cun of fresh Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shan Yao). Finely chop and grind into powder. Decoct with 3 he of water until reduced to 6 he. Add ginger juice and a little salt flower, mix well, and take in divided doses. Treats regurgitation and vomiting of food.
Papaveri Powder: Take 1 liang of Papaveris Pericarpium (with 1 liang of Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Chenpi), grind into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, administered with Mume Fructus decoction (Wumei Tang). Treats chronic dysentery or heat dysentery with blood in stool, and continuous watery diarrhea.
Shen Su Qiao (a specific preparation involving Poppy Shell): 5 qian of Papaveris Pericarpium (stir-fried with vinegar into powder, then stir-fried again in a copper vessel). Areca Semen (Binglang) stir-fried until red, ground into powder. Dosage varies according to age. Administered with sugar water for red or white dysentery. Treats pediatric dysentery.
Bilao San: Take 1 liang 5 qian of Papaveris Pericarpium (remove stem and membrane, stir-fry with vinegar to obtain 1 liang) and Mume Fructis (Wumei) ground into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, administered with warm water before sleep. Treats chronic cough accompanied by spontaneous sweating.
Papaveri Ointment: Take 15 Papaveris flowers and 4 liang of oil. Fry the flowers until withered, filter cleanly. Add 3 qian of beeswax, melt completely, and pour into a bowl. When it begins to congeal, add 2 qian of Calamina (Qingfen), mix well, and place in water to cool. Pick up with a silver instrument, rub in palm to soften, apply to affected area, cover with cotton paper, change twice daily. Pain will cease naturally. The next day, wipe off dead skin and reapply. Treats scalds and burns.
Papaveris Pericarpium is superior to Papaveris Semen in stopping pain, astringing essence, and treating chronic dysentery, but it is toxic. If poisoned, place the patient on the ground where a corpse lay (in a damp, shady place). Pry open the teeth with chopsticks, place them horizontally in the mouth to keep it open. Administer cold water mixed with white sugar frequently. Apply cold water-soaked towels to the chest, replacing them alternately. Tofu can also be used. Additionally, use a basin of cold water, scatter hair in it, and change the water frequently. Strictly avoid sunlight. After three to four days, when the toxin dissipates, the patient will revive. If the body is not yet stiff, revival is possible even within seven days. After revival, administer large amounts of white sugar water and mung bean powder. Another method: Real Borax (Nan Peng Sha) mixed with cold water taken internally resolves toxicity immediately. Alternatively, administer clear oil, duck blood, egg white, or decoction of Bahuang Cao (Patrinia Herba) crushed and cooled. Frequent administration of soap water is also effective. However, if ingested with liquor, it is difficult to save.
Methods for Quitting Opium Addiction:
(1) Siwu Yin.
(2) Extract juice from Pumpkin Stem (Nangua Teng), mix with brown sugar and yellow sugar, and take.
(3) Papaveris Pericarpium (honey-roasted thoroughly) 1 jin 8 liang, Cinnamomi Cortex (Rougui) 6 liang, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) roasted 1 liang each. For cough, add Almond (Xingren) 1 liang (ground to paste), Ophiopogonis Radix (Maidong) 1 liang, Honey 4 liang, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) 2 liang. For general weakness, double the dose of Codonopsis Radix (Dangshen). For diarrhea, double the dose of Poria (Fuling) and Zingiberis Rhizoma (Paojiang). For lower back pain, add Eucommiae Cortex (Duzhong) 3 liang. For poor appetite, add Amomi Fructus (Sharen) 1 liang. For sensation of qi sinking, double Dangshen. Add Magnoliae Flos (Hualuo) and Farfarae Flos (Kuandonghua) 3 qian each, plus 3 qian of tobacco ash. Decoct into one bowl, strain, divide into over ten doses, mix with wine. Take early addiction medicine in the morning, late addiction medicine in the evening.
(5) Papaveris Pericarpium 8 qian, Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium 8 fen, Charred Cha (Chatan) 1 qian, Scorched Atractylodis Rhizoma (Jiaozhu) 5 fen, Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma (Paojiang) 8 fen, Eucommiae Cortex 1 qian, Glycyrrhizae Radix 2 qian, Roasted Astragali Radix (Zhi Huangqi) 3 qian, Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu) 7 fen, Codonopsis Radix 1 liang. Take once daily; addiction can be broken after more than a month.
(6) Use 1-2 eels daily, drip blood into wine and take. Mild cases: 40-50 eels; severe cases: over 100 eels.
(7) Single herb Glycyrrhizae Radix boiled into paste, mixed into tobacco for smoking. Within two to three days, craving gradually decreases.
(8) Codonopsis Radix 2 liang, Lonicerae Japonicae Flos (Jinyinhua), Inulae Flos (Xuanfuhua), Rehmanniae Radix (Da Shengdi) 5 qian each, Ophiopogonis Radix, Asparagi Radix (Tian Dong), Stir-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba (Chao Baishao), Poria, Quisqualis Fructus (Mu Gua) 1 qian each, Evodiae Fructus (Wuyu), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Astragali Complanati Semen (Shayuanzi), Eucommiae Cortex 4 qian each. Add 2 qian tobacco ash. Decoct similarly to opium paste. Can add 5 qian brown sugar. Reduce tobacco ash by 5 fen per subsequent dose. By the fifth dose, no tobacco ash is needed. Severe cases require 4-5 doses; mild cases 3 doses. For those addicted to 1 qian of opium, take 2 qian per dose, dissolved in hot water.
(9) Lord Lin Wenzhong's Formula: Codonopsis Radix, Poria, Roasted Codonopsis Radix (Luoshen), Roasted Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma (Yuzhu), Carbonized Zingiberis Rhizoma (Jiantan), Stir-fried Papaveris Flower, Eucommiae Cortex, Exocarpium Citri Grandis (Juhong), Lycii Fructus (Gouqi) 4 qian each; Inulae Flos, Roasted Glycyrrhizae Radix, Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia), Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren) 2 qian 4 fen each; Ziziphi Spinosae Semen (Suanzaoren) 2 qian, Red Dates (pitted) 4 qian. Decoct three times, retain about one bowl of liquid. Then, depending on the severity of addiction, add tobacco ash (max 4 qian). Filter as in opium making, decoct with herbs until reduced to about one tea cup. Add half a jin of brown sugar to form a paste. Take 5 qian with boiling water every morning. If starting with 4 qian tobacco ash, reduce by 5 fen each time. When reaching 5 fen, take several extra doses, then stop using ash. Two to three doses will break the addiction. For abdominal sinking sensation, add Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang) 2 qian. Opium severely damages blood vessels, but because it acts as an excitant, Codonopsis is often used. However, blood nourishment is ultimately required, so Method Eight among these formulas is the most appropriate.
