Indications: Relieves pain, stops bleeding, promotes tissue regeneration, reduces swelling, treats numbness of the four limbs, bone pain, weakness of the knees, heat syndromes, wind-dampness, malignant sores, metal wounds (injuries caused by sharp metal objects), injuries from the urine of earwigs, spider bites, dog bites, and tiger attacks. (For all these conditions, crush and apply externally.)
Pill Formula: Take one jin of Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba). Harvest in the fifth or sixth lunar month, select stems with red coloration, wash clean, dry thoroughly, use only the clean leaves, grind into fine powder, mix with honey and wine to form pills the size of a wu zi (Cibotii Rhizoma). Take 100 pills per dose, swallow with warm wine on an empty stomach. Treats facial deviation due to stroke (Zhong Feng), drooling, slurred speech, and weakness of the hands and feet.
Another Prescription: Take Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Cang Er Zi (Xanthii Fructus), Hu Tao Rou (Juglandis Semen) each two liang, Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) five qian, Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) two qian. Place in a jar of San Bai Jiu (Three White Liquor), wrap the herbs in silk, soak in the wine. Simmer over water until fully infused, cool for one day. Drink one cup on an empty stomach; after three to four days, increase to half a cup. Treats flaccid paralysis and pain throughout the body caused by wind-pathogen attacking.
[Lu Gen]
Indications: Clears heat, stops vomiting, relieves thirst, treats regurgitation, and frequent urination.
Lu Gen Tang (Reed Root Decoction): Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma) one liang (crushed), Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) each five qian (ground into powder). Take one qian per dose, add eight fen of water, add three leaves of Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), decoct until five fen remains, strain, and take warm. Treats jaundice (Huang Bing).
Another Prescription: Sheng Lu Gen (Fresh Phragmitis Rhizoma) four fen, Ju Hong (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Rubrum) four fen, Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) six fen, Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) two fen, Pi Pa Ye (Loquats Leaf) three fen. Decoct in water, take hot on an empty stomach. Treats vomiting and loss of appetite during pregnancy.
Lu Gen Yin (Reed Root Drink): Lu Gen (Phragmitis Rhizoma), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas), Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) each one qian, Hei Shen (Ginseng Radix Nigra), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) each one qian five fen. Grind into coarse powder. Add two zhan of water, decoct until one zhan remains, strain, and take warm after meals. Treats sudden redness and swelling of the eyes with nebula (cataract-like opacity).
[Ma Huang]
Indications: Induces sweating, regulates blood vessels, opens pores, unblocks interstices (Cou Li), benefits the nine orifices. Treats phlegm-wheezing, asthma, jaundice, edema, wind-edema, and postpartum abdominal pain due to blood stasis in women. This is a key herb for releasing the exterior in the Liver Meridian. Overdose leads to exterior deficiency and qi depletion.
Ma Huang Sheng Ma Tang (Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction): Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) each one liang five zhu. Add one dou of water. First decoct Ma Huang for one or two boils, remove the foam on top, then add the remaining herbs. Decoct to obtain three sheng, strain, divide into three warm doses. The interval between doses should be approximately the time it takes to cook three dou of rice. Consume completely. Recovery occurs with sweating.
Treats Cold Damage (Shang Han) for six or seven days, following severe purgation, presenting with deep and slow pulse at the Cun position, cold extremities, absent pulse at the lower positions, throat obstruction, and expectoration of pus and blood.
One Red Date (Da Zao) to two, add two zhong of water, decoct until eight fen remains, take on an empty stomach. Treats wind-cold, summer-heat, dampness, and fluid accumulation affecting the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian, causing spasms and numbness of the waist and legs, heavy joint pain, difficulty walking, aversion to cold with fever, absence of sweat with aversion to cold, or spontaneous sweating with aversion to wind, headache, dizziness, and osteomyelitis (Fu Gu Ju) located on the posterior thigh, belonging to the Foot-Taiyang Bladder Meridian. If spontaneous sweating is present, remove Ma Huang and add Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex) and Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba); for severe cases, add Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium); if no sweat, reduce Rou Gui and add Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) and Ze Xie (Alismatis Rhizoma).
Ma Xing Shi Gan Tang (Ephedra, Apricot Kernel, Gypsum, and Licorice Decoction): Treats interior and exterior heat, absence of sweat or spontaneous sweating, headache, body ache, heaviness of the body with somnolence, snoring, difficulty speaking, irritability, thirst, aversion to heat, and floating pulse. If the pulse is floating and weak, deep and tight, or constricted, accompanied by aversion to cold, spontaneous sweating, and absence of thirst, this formula is contraindicated. It can be used for excess heat in the Lungs or for children with measles eruption that is not smooth, accompanied by wheezing and a solid pulse.
Ma Huang Ding Chuan Tang (Ephedra Asthma-Calming Decoction): Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba), Su Mu (Sappan Lignum), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shen Qu (Massa Medicata Fermentata) each five li, Hong Hua (Carthami Flos) a small amount, Quan Xie (Scorpio) one piece. Divide into two doses. Add one da zhan of water, decoct until seven fen remains, take warm far from mealtime. Mild sweating indicates efficacy. Note: When using this herb to induce sweating, the nodes (jie) of Ma Huang should be removed, as the nodes actually stop sweating. When used to calm asthma, at least two nodes are required for efficacy, and it should be combined with Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) to achieve results.
