Indications: Strengthens the Yin, benefits essence, promotes urination, clears wind-heat of the Lung and Liver, drains damp-heat from the Bladder, brightens the eyes, and removes nebula. Treats five types of strangury (Wu Lin), headache, induces labor, and expels the fetus.

[Formula] Cheqianzi Wan (Plantago Seed Pill): Take stir-fried Semen Plantaginis (Cheqianzi), Poria Cocos (Baifuling), Polyporus Umbellatus (Zhuling), Moslae Herba (Xiangru), and Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen) in equal parts. Grind into fine powder, mix with water decocted with Juncus effusus (Dengxincao), and take orally. Treats cholera-like disease characterized by vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, and thirst.

[Another Prescription] For treating various types of strangury: Take Semen Plantaginis (Cheqianzi), Lophatheri Herba (Danzhuye), Poria Cocos with Red Core (Chifuling), and Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjiesui) each 2.5 qian, and 20 stalks of Juncus effusus (Dengxin). Decoct in two zhong of water until one zhong remains. Take before meals.

[Another Prescription] For heat accumulation in the Small Intestine, even leading to hematuria: Take processed Licorice Root (Zhigancao) and Mirabilite (Puxiao) each 1 fen, and Oyster Shell (Muli) calcined to powder 5 qian. Pound into a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct in a small cup of water until reduced to half a cup, strain, and take at any time. Adjust dosage according to the child's age.

[Formula] Zhujing Wan (Residing Light Pill): Take Semen Plantaginis (Cheqianzi) and Prepared Rehmanniae Radix (Shudihuang) steamed and dried with wine each 3 liang, and Dodder Seed (Tusizi) soaked in wine 5 liang. Grind into powder, make pills with honey the size of wutong seeds. Take 30 pills per dose with warm wine, twice daily. Treats dim vision, blurred vision, or formation of cataracts/nebula due to deficiency of both Liver and Kidney, as well as tearing upon exposure to wind.

Note: The leaves and roots of this plant have similar effects.

Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus): The root, stem, and shell have similar effects, but the shell is used more frequently. Indications: Purges fire, clears heat, reduces swelling, discharges pus, relieves pain, and promotes urination. Treats scrofula (Luoli), carbuncles, sores, and boils. It can be used for all heat syndromes not belonging to deficient fire.

[Formula] Lianhuai San (Lianqiao and Sophora Powder): Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Sophorae Fructus Immaturus (Huaijiao), Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian), Donkey-hide Gelatin (Ejiao), Hawthorn Fruit (Shanzha), and Medicated Leaven (Shenqu) in equal parts. Grind into powder. Take a small amount, place on the palm, and lick occasionally to allow saliva to moisten and swallow. Treats blood stagnation.

[Formula] Lianqiao Wan (Forsythia Pill): Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Morus Alba Bark (Sangbaipi), Pulsatillae Radix (Baitouweng), Moutan Cortex (Danpi), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai), Cinnamon Twig (Guixin), Fermented Soybean (Xiangchi), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Duohuo), and Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao) each 1 liang, and Sargassum (Haizao) 5 qian. Grind into powder, make pills with honey the size of adzuki beans, and take with Juncus effusus decoction. Treats children with unexplained alternating chills and fever, where the body remains strong, but there are tubercles/scrofula in the neck, or hard nodules in the heart, abdomen, hypochondrium, and back that are painless. Children aged three take 5 pills per dose, increasing to 10; for those over five, increase appropriately.

[Formula] Lianqiao Chi Xiao Dou Tang (Forsythia and Adzuki Bean Decoction): Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Adzuki Bean (Chixiaodou), Ephedrae Herba (Mahuang), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang), and Cortex Catalpae Viridis (Shengzibapi) each 2 liang, and Jujubae Fructus (Dazao) 12 pieces. Cut into fragments. Take 2 qian per dose, decoct in water and take orally. Treats pediatric cold damage with fever and jaundice.

[Formula] Lianqiao Baidu San (Forsythia Detoxifying Powder): Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix (Qianghuo), Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Duohuo), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng), Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao), Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Chuanxiong), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) stir-fried and ground on a new tile, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dangguiwei) washed with wine, Croci Stigma (Zanghonghua) washed with wine, Sappan Lignum (Sumu), and Bupleuri Radix (Tianhuafen - *Note: Tianhuafen is Trichosanthis Radix, likely a typo in original or specific local usage, translating as Trichosanthes Root*) etc. Decoct with one cup of water and one cup of good wine until half remains. Strain and take warm slowly. Treats initial swelling of parotitis (Fayi) and the initial stage of all carbuncles and sores, with aversion to cold and high fever, severe cases presenting with headache and stiffness resembling cold damage. If the swelling has not subsided, add Pangolin Scale (Chuanshanjia) fried with clam powder 1 qian; if swelling extends to the face, add Angelicae Dahuricae Radix (Xiangbaizhi) 1 qian and Rhapontici Rhizoma (Loulu) 0.5 qian. If stool is dry and solid, add Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang) soaked in wine 1.5 qian, double for robust individuals. For internal heat or alternating chills and fever, double Bupleuri Radix (Chaihu) and add Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) washed with wine and Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian) stir-fried with wine each 1 qian.

[Formula] Lianqiao San (Forsythia Powder): Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao) 1 liang, Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum (Chenxiang) and Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin) each 5 qian, Mirabilite (Puxiao), Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang) processed, and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) each 1 fen. Pound and crush. Take 1 qian per dose, add one cup of water and 1 li of Musk (Shexiang), decoct until reduced to half a cup, strain, and take warm after meals. Treats carbuncles and boils.

[Another Prescription] For treating phlegm-fluid retention: Take Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), Puerariae Radix (Gegen), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi), Platycodonis Radix (Jiegeng), Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maidong), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) stir-fried, Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui), Trichosanthis Radix (Gualougen), Dried Rehmanniae Radix (Shengandihuang), Schizonepetae Spica (Jingjie), Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin), Paeoniae Radix Rubra (Chishao), Ophiopogonis Tuber (Maidong), Diantherae Herba (Qumai), Akebia Caulis (Mutong), Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) stir-fried, Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhizi), and Saposhnikoviae Radix (Fangfeng) in equal parts. Chew/crush, take 4 qian per dose, add one and a half cups of water and 12 stalks of Juncus effusus, decoct until reduced to eight-tenths, strain, and take. Treats various malignant sores with redness, swelling, restlessness, dry mouth, and women's blood-wind sores characterized by itching, pain, ulceration, and yellow discharge.
