Take 3 liang of Realgar (Xionghuang, 雄黄), mixed with 5 liang each of Licorice Root (Gancao, 甘草), Purple-backed Tiankui (Zibeitiankui, 紫背天葵), Groundsel (Dizhan, 地胆 - *Note: Text says Dizhan, likely referring to a specific local herb or typo for Dizao/Dizhuang, but translating as written*), and Bilenghua (碧棱花). Cut them into fine segments. Add fresh water, place in a crucible pot, and decoct for the duration of the "Three Fu" periods (the three hottest periods of summer). Strain and remove the solids. Pound into a powder. Perform wet grinding (water flying) to refine it. Allow to settle, discard the black impurities, dry in the sun, and grind again for use. Another method is to decoct with rice vinegar and radish juice until dry. After this processing, the toxicity is reduced, but it should not be taken internally.
Indications: Treats dysentery and diarrhea caused by latent summerheat; resolves blood stasis in the abdomen; treats poisoning from various insects and beasts. It is particularly effective for snake bites. It is an essential herb for treating sores and detoxification.
Xiongzhu San (Realgar and Cinnabar Powder): 1 fen of Realgar (finely ground and water-fly refined), 1 qian of Frankincense (Ruxiang, 乳香, finely ground), and 1 qian of Alum (Baifan, 白矾). Grind all together into a powder. Take 1 zi (approx. 0.1-0.2g) per dose; for children aged 2-3 years, take 5 fen. Administer with old rice soup, three times daily. Treats frequent pediatric dysentery with unbearable day-and-night pain.
Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill): 1 qian each of Realgar, Scorpion (Quanxie, 全蝎), Tooth Soap (Yazao, 牙皂), Rhubarb (Dahuang, 大黄), Turmeric Tuber (Yujin, 郁金); 14 seeds of Croton Seed (Badou, 巴豆); a small amount of Musk (Shexiang, 麝香). Grind into powder, bind with rice paste to form pills the size of mung beans. Take 5-7 pills with clear tea. Treats carbuncles (Dingchuang, 疔疮) accompanied by constipation or abdominal pain. Stop taking when bowel movements are relieved.
Xionghuang Muli San (Realgar and Oyster Shell Powder): 2 qian of Realgar, 4 qian of Oyster Shell (Muli, 牡蛎). Grind into powder. Mix with honey, warm in a double-boiler, and apply to the affected area 5-6 times daily. Treats early-stage "Tianshe Du" (Heavenly Snake Poison, a severe snakebite or similar toxic condition) presenting with redness and pain.
Xionghuang San (Realgar Powder): 5 qian each of Realgar, Cinnabar (Dansha, 丹砂), Frankincense, and Myrrh (Moyao, 没药); 3 liang of Millet Starch (Sulimi Xiaofen, 粟米小粉, stir-fried); 1 liang each of Aconite Root (Caowu, 草乌), Arisaema (Nanxing, 南星), Trachelospermum Vine (Luoshi, 络石), Lily Bulb (Baihe, 百合); 2 liang of Bletilla Rhizome (Baiji, 白芨). Grind into powder, mix with warm water, and apply externally. Treats carbuncles and back infections (Yongju Fabei, 痈疽发背).
Another Prescription: Realgar, [missing character, possibly Ash], and Cocklebur Herb (Cangercao, 苍耳草, burnt to ash). Grind into powder, mix with vinegar. Separately, mash Chrysanthemum flowers and mix with ginger juice. Combine the two mixtures. The thinner consistency is taken orally, and the thicker consistency is applied topically. Treats carbuncles.
Hongsheng Dan (Red Ascending Elixir): 5 qian each of Realgar and Cinnabar; 2 qian of Mercury (Shuiyin, 水银); 4 liang of Saltpeter (Huoxiao, 火硝); 1 liang of Alum; 6 qian of Green Vitriol (Zaofan, 皂矾). First, grind the alum and saltpeter finely, place in a large copper spoon, add a small cup of liquor, and melt over heat. Once dry, remove immediately and grind finely. Grind the mercury, cinnabar, realgar, and other medicines finely separately. Combine and grind uniformly. Prepare a Yangcheng jar by lining it with paper-mud paste about one sheet thick. Dry in the shade, gently tapping to avoid cracks. If cracks appear, patch with mud. Dry thoroughly in the sun until no cracks remain before loading the medicine. Seal the jar mouth with an iron oil lamp cover, add an iron beam. Secure the lamp and jar with iron wire. Stuff the gaps around the jar mouth with cotton wicks dipped in honey. Seal the exterior with a mixture of calcined gypsum powder and vinegar. Place two charcoal bricks on the lamp to heat it. The seal at the jar mouth dries easily. Drive three large nails into the ground and place the jar on them. Place a large piece of solid charcoal at the bottom. Build a hundred-eye furnace around it. Burn for the duration of three incense sticks. For the first stick, use bottom fire only (too much fire causes mercury to sublime too early). For the second stick, use fire filling half the jar; moisten the lamp with a brush dipped in water. For the third stick, level the fire with the jar mouth, fan the fire, and frequently wipe the lamp to prevent drying (drying causes premature sublimation of mercury). After three incenses, extinguish the fire. Let cool completely, then open. Collect approximately 6-7 qian of elixir from the lamp, grind extremely finely, and store in a porcelain jar. (Pre-treat the jar mouth with mud mixed with salt brine to prevent gas leakage. If green smoke rises from the jar, mercury is escaping; re-seal the leaking areas thoroughly.) Treats all types of ulcerated sores with hard edges and purple-black tissue; extracts toxins, removes necrotic tissue, and promotes muscle regeneration.
Smoke Realgar with Atractylodes Rhizome (Cangzhu, 苍术), Angelica Dahurica Root (Baizhi, 白芷), and garlic cloves to repel snake venom and insect bites.
Mix Realgar with distilled spirits (burning wine) and apply topically to treat bites from various poisonous insects.
Note: Those that are red and crystal-clear are called Xiongjing (Realgar Essence). Red ones are Xionghuang (Realgar), and yellow ones are Cihuang (Orpiment). The quality varies, which is not determined by the origin's yin-yang attributes.
