Those produced in Guizhou are of superior quality. It is a natural compound of Hydrargyrum (Mercury) and Sulfur. First, select the finest material and grind it into powder. Perform water levigation three times, or place the Cinnabar in a silk bag.
Pour the juice obtained by leaching buckwheat ash over it, boil for three "Fu" periods, then remove. Soak and rinse thoroughly with running water, then grind into powder, perform water levigation again, and dry in the sun before it can be used in medicine.
Main indications: Promotes blood circulation, calms the spirit, treats convulsions and epilepsy, applies topically to treat sores and scabies, wards off epidemics, expels dead fetus, and can also induce sweating.
Gengyi Wan (Changing Clothes Pill): 5 qian of Zhusha (Cinnabaris), 7 qian of Lvhui (Aloe). (Used raw.) Grind to an extremely fine powder. Mix with a small amount of good wine to form pills, sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take 1.2 qian per dose. Administer with good wine or rice gruel. Treats constipation due to dryness of the intestines and stomach. Historically, this medicine was believed that long-term use could confer spiritual clarity and immortality; however, both Mercury and Sulfur are toxic. If processed correctly, toxicity can be avoided; otherwise, severe poisoning difficult to treat will inevitably occur.
Main indications: Calms the spirit, induces abortion, kills lice, treats malignant sores.
Method for preparing Qingfen (Calomel): 1 liang of Hydrargyrum (Mercury), 2 liang of Baijian (Alumen), 1 liang of Yanshi (Sodium Chloride). Grind together until no silver specks are visible. Spread inside an iron vessel, cover with a small black earthenware pot. Seal the mouth of the pot with a mixture of sifted stove ash and salt water. Calcine over charcoal fire for the time it takes to burn two incense sticks. Upon opening, the powder rises to the upper pot, completing the preparation. Another method: 1 liang of Hydrargyrum (Mercury), 7 qian of Zaofan (Vitriol), 5 qian of Baishen (White Salt). Grind together and calcine as described above. Yet another method: First, stir-fry 4 liang of Zaofan (Vitriol), 1 liang of Salt, and 5 qian of Yanxiao (Saltpeter) until yellow to create a "qu" (catalyst/medium). Add 1 liang of Hydrargyrum (Mercury), 2 liang of the prepared qu, and 1 qian of Baijian (Alumen). Grind uniformly and calcine as described above.
Qingfen Wan (Calomel Pill): 1 qian of Qingfen (Calomel), 2.5 qian each of Xionghuang (Realgar) and Zhusha (Cinnabar), 1 liang each of Huaihua (Sophorae Flos, stir-fried) and Guijia (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted). Grind into powder and form pills sized like Sophora japonica seeds. Take 1 qian per dose with cold tea, twice daily. Cure within seven days. Treats syphilis.
Another prescription: 2 qian each of Qingfen (Calomel), Hutao Ren (Juglandis Semen), Huaihua (Sophorae Flos, stir-fried and ground), Guijia (Testudinis et Chelonis Carapax et Plastrum, roasted), and Hongzaorou (Ziziphi Jujubae Mesocarp). Grind and mash into pills. Divide into three doses. On the first day, administer with chicken broth; on the second day, with wine; on the third day, with tea. Treats syphilis.
Another prescription: 1 liang of Hydrargyrum (Mercury), 2.5 qian each of Zhusha (Cinnabar) and Xionghuang (Realgar), 2.5 liang each of Baijian (Alumen) and Lvfan (Chalcanthite). Grind uniformly, place in a jar, cover with a lamp saucer, seal tightly with salt mud. Refine using mild and strong heat, sweep up the powder rising from the jar mouth. For each application, mix 3 qian with 5 fen each of Ruxiang (Boswelliae Resina) and Moyao (Myrrhae Resina), sprinkle onto Taiyi Gao (Taiyi Plaster), and apply to the affected area. Extremely effective. Treats carbuncles, ulcers, and syphilis.
Whenever Mercury or Calomel is ingested, although effects may appear quickly, the toxin invades the meridians, causing swelling and ulceration of the mouth and teeth, or pain and contracture of muscles and bones. In the long term, this leads to difficult-to-heal ulcers and permanent disability. Alternatively, Calomel may be used to induce abortion, or taken for suicide, resulting in a ghastly cyan complexion.
To treat poisoning and ulceration caused by ingestion: Internally take Hongzao Wan (Red Date Pill); externally apply Hamasan (Toad Powder). (Attached Prescription) Hongzao Wan (Red Date Pill): 3 jin of Hongzao (Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus), boiled with Shanmu (Cupressi Lignum) until cooked. Remove skin and pits. Use abundant Cupressi Lignum ash, grind into fine powder. Mash the date flesh into pills, sized like marbles. Take freely daily without interruption. Another prescription: 1 liang of Tufuling (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma), 1 qian each of Yimi (Coicis Semen), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex), 1.5 qian of Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), 4 fen of Zhaojiazi (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina). Decoct in water. Add Renshen (Ginseng Radix) for Qi deficiency, Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) for Blood deficiency. Take three times daily.
Hamasan (Toad Powder): One large Toad (Do not use if eyes are red or abdomen lacks a figure-eight pattern). 3 qian of Sulfur, 2 qian of Hujiao (Piperis Longi Fructus). Insert into the toad's mouth, tie the mouth tightly, wrap in yellow mud, and roast in charcoal fire until the mud turns red-hot. Remove, cover with a bowl, and let cool. Remove mud, take out the toad, and grind into powder. Mix with Sesame Oil (May Zhi). Apply to the affected area using a duck feather or old brush. Avoid iron utensils. For other poisonings: Use Kaikou Huajiao (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus with split husk), any amount, swallow with warm water. It can wrap the toxin and expel it via stool. Another prescription: Mix May Zhi (Sesamum Indicum Oleum), Huangmi (Mel), and Hongshatang (Brown Sugar) evenly and ingest. Another prescription: Drink freshly squeezed Radish Juice. Another prescription: Drink Sesame Oil. Another prescription: Eat plenty of fresh Water Chestnuts.
For poisoning manifesting as bleeding from gum fissures, foul odor, and swelling: Use 3 qian of Guanzhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma) and 2 qian of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma). Decoct in water, let cool slightly, add 2 fen of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) powder, and use for rinsing the mouth. If accidentally entered the ear: Place a gold pillow beside the ear to extract it. If accidentally entered the flesh: Causing muscle contracture, apply hot metal objects to extract it.
