It grows on the banks of mountain streams and in low-lying damp areas. The leaves have five lobes, growing attached to the stem. The root resembles *Radix Stellerae* (Yelangdu, 野狼毒), with a skin featuring spiral wrinkles. It is similar to a sea conch but grows in mountains, hence its name. Although it grows near streams, its nature prefers dryness; its branches and leaves are lush yet delicate, making it suitable for potted ornamental use. *Baicao Jing* records: Grows in mountain soil, harvested in February. It closely resembles *Radix Stellerae*, distinguished only by bumpy skin that exudes white latex when broken. Its leaves have four lobes, with creeping stems. After autumn, it bears seeds resembling abacus beads, supported by four surrounding leaves. To treat swelling, toxic sores, and scrofula, take the juice mixed with wine. Apply the dregs to the affected area. Wang Lianshi states: The seedlings creep, roots resemble radishes, with a foul odor. It is highly effective in treating severe syphilitic ulcers. In Wang An’s herbal prescription, Shanhai Luo, also known as Baiheche, combined with Ziheche (Placenta Humana) and red/white Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), forms the formula Sisheng San. It is effective for intestinal abscesses, perianal abscesses, visceral toxins, mastitis, and carbuncles. Zhang Yan’s *Zhongdou Xinshu* records: Shuiyangliu remains a herbaceous plant, growing beside stream beds. Leaves resemble willow; stems are green in spring, turning red by late summer and early autumn. They grow straight upward without branching, bearing faint red flowers in autumn. For pustules that are scorched, purple, dry, and shriveled, washing with this water makes them immediately bright and promotes fluid discharge, with miraculous efficacy. Upon inspection after washing, the contrast between washed and unwashed areas is starkly clear in terms of brightness and color. No method accelerates fluid discharge more quickly than this. However, one must frequently wipe with a towel soaked in the medicinal water until sufficient moisture is achieved. If leaves fall in winter and autumn, use the roots. Li Shizhen’s *Bencao Gangmu* under the Wood section mentions Shuiyang, which also treats smallpox toxins. Citing Wei Zhi’s *Aixin Jian* bath method for smallpox, the described morphology differs completely from this. Only the annotation for Chi Yang (Red Poplar) in the Collected Explanations is somewhat close to Zhang Yan’s description, though lacking therapeutic indications, thus it is supplemented here. Nature slightly cold, taste undefined. Cools blood and detoxifies; bathing with it for scorched black smallpox lesions yields immediate results. Treats traumatic injuries, plague, and resolves summer-heat stagnation and malignant toxins. Treatment for smallpox: Shuiyangliu Decoction. Zhang Yan used Shuiyangliu Decoction for smallpox presenting as red-purple, dry, and failing to fill with pus. He noted ancient prescriptions describe a woody plant with fine leaves, red stems, round fruits on branches, and white floss emerging from the fruits. This is commonly called Shuiyangmei due to fruit resemblance to bayberry. I have not tested it. My commonly used variety is a herb growing by water, with willow-like leaves and reddish stems in autumn, bearing no fruit. In winter, use stems and roots; in spring, summer, and autumn, use branches and leaves. For smallpox that is red-purple, dry, and fails to fill with fluid, internally administer blood-invigorating and detoxifying agents. Externally, decoct this herb to wash the head and face repeatedly. Immediate brightness and smoothness appear, promoting pus formation, while unwashed areas remain unchanged. Fe Jianzhong’s *Jiu Pian Suoyan* uses herbaceous Shuiyangliu decocted in wine for hand and foot contracture, proving very effective. Prescription for hemorrhoids and fistulas (*Chuanxin Fang*): Decoct Shuiyangliu roots for washing; cure occurs when parasites exit. Prolapsed bladder: Liu Yuyi’s verified prescription: Also known as Qiebing. Purple-colored cases are treatable; white ones are not. Combine Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) 1 qian, Gouji (Cibotii Rhizoma), Shuiyangliu roots, Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis), and Yuxingcao (Houttuyniae Herba) in unspecified proportions, plus roughly 1 qian of Kunfan (Alumen). Grind into powder, decoct in water. Fumigate first, then wash. While warm, gently push the prolapse back in. Rest for one to two days for recovery. Follow with regulatory herbs. Mao Shihong’s *Jingyan Ji*: Qianqianhuo is synonymous with Shuiyangliu. Its roots treat syphilitic chancres.
