Zhang Qingzi's *Secret Formulas Collected and Verified* records: To treat "Zhuxin Shan" (Heart Hernia), use goat oil that has not fallen into water. Wrap it in a lotus leaf, hang it in a ventilated place to dry in the shade, ensuring it is not exposed to rain. When this condition occurs, take 3 to 5 qian (approx. 15–25 g) and mix with hot wine for ingestion; those who do not drink alcohol may use boiling water instead. It also treats various types of hernia.
Note: Wentang's *Collected Experiences* uses goat blood (*Capra Hircus Sanguis*) to treat Zhuxin Shan. The description is similar, but upon careful examination of the text, the phrase "not falling into water" implies the use of oil rather than blood. Wentang mistakenly identified oil as blood, so this is corrected here. Goats are also found in southern China, but those from Guangdong are superior; their blood is particularly rapid-acting.
One sheng (approx. 1 L) of goat feces (*Caprae Hircus Faeces*) and one sheng of water powder are soaked overnight. The juice is extracted by squeezing and taken hot in one dose to treat ganli (infantile malnutrition with diarrhea).
Zhu Xi in *Bencao* records: Ash from mountain grass feces can treat ulcerations and promote muscle regeneration.
It is used in external medicine for wound closure. Zhu's Effective Formula, Date Pill: Sun-dried goat feces are stir-fried in a pot until charred but retaining their medicinal properties, then ground into fine powder for storage. For chronic ulcers that are unbearable and nearing exposure of internal organs, remove the skin and pits of large dates, mash them into a paste, add the aforementioned powder, and knead into pills. Take 4 qian (approx. 12–20 g) per dose, washed down with black date decoction. This substance is highly effective in contracting various ulcerated wounds, producing miraculous results.
Shanlian Powder: Take one live crucian carp, cut open the abdomen, remove the entrails, stuff the cavity full of goat feces, and slowly roast it on a tile over low heat until dry but retaining medicinal properties. Grind into powder, add 1 qian (approx. 3–5 g) of Moschus (She Xiang), and seal for storage. If encountering an ulcer where rotting has exposed internal organs, separated only by a membrane, apply this powder directly to the wound for immediate healing.
Leitou Feng (Thunderhead Wind): Zhu's Effective Formula states that if all other medicines fail, goat feces stir-fried to charcoal and ground into powder are very effective. A rhyme goes: "Thunder shakes the wrapped head, Goat feces have their affinity; Two qian sent down with wine, No clamor in the forehead."
To treat heart pain, whether long-standing or recent. Yuquan Formula: Take seven grains of goat feces and a handful of oily hair, burn them together into ash, mix with good wine, and ingest. This prevents recurrence permanently.
*Guangdong Tongzhi* records: Stone sheep are black, resembling domestic sheep but more agile. Their horns can be made into fire cups to treat Toufeng (Wind affecting the head); their skin can be made into mats to cure bone and tendon pain; their blood can treat traumatic injuries, similar to goats from the Qin region.
*Zhaoqing Zhi* records: Stone sheep inhabit mountains in Gaoyao. They resemble sheep but are larger and sturdier, with long horns and thick ears. Each follicle of this sheep produces three hairs. The wool is soft and durable. My brother-in-law Zhu Wenting, serving in Guangdong, once sent a pair of stone sheep gallbladders, stored in a silver box, size like a little finger, tied at one end with silk thread, dried. He stated this item is hard to obtain. The method to test authenticity: Hang the gallbladder on the chest; if one can walk quickly without panting, it is genuine. It treats fractures better than goat blood.
To treat all eye diseases, including asthenopia and blindness due to labor, mix with human milk for instillation; for wind-fire conditions, mix with Saposhnikoviae Radix juice for instillation. This substance removes nebulae miraculously; mixing with water is also acceptable.
Its efficacy for traumatic falls and blows is the same as goat blood.
Mr. Cao Rinting, who once served in Guizhou, said: Border regions produce stone sheep. They are small as rabbits, agile and hard to catch. If caught, the abdomen must be opened immediately to extract the gallbladder; otherwise, it will rupture inside. Dried gallbladder can treat sudden collapse due to Liver Jue (Liver Qi rebellion causing syncope); ingesting 1–2 li (approx. 0.03–0.06 g) with wine restores consciousness. Its heart blood treats Zhenxintong (True Heart Pain) with notable effect. Glue boiled from bone and skin dispels wind and invigorates blood with miraculous efficacy.
