Produced in the lands of Huiguo (an ancient term for Western Regions and Central Asia), it is recorded in *Yinshan Zhengyao* (Essential Prescriptions for the Royal Kitchen).
The taste is sweet, non-toxic. It regulates the middle jiao (middle burner/organ system) and promotes the smooth flow of qi, nourishes the Lung Metal (Lungs), calms acute asthma, and benefits the body with long-term consumption. For San-Yin malaria (a type of malaria with a longer cycle or severe symptoms) that has resisted all other medicines, take three pieces of Bisi Da, one cup of wine, decoct until half remains, and drink; the malaria will cease immediately.
For difficult labor where delivery does not occur, or if the fetus has died in the womb, take seven pieces of Bisi Da, decoct in wine, and ingest; the fetus will be delivered. It also treats retained placenta.
*Guang Zhi* records: The Huangpi fruit resembles a golden pellet, ripens in June, and its juice is sour and sweet, similar to grapes. When eaten together with lychee, if one feels stuffed from excessive lychee consumption, Huangpi fruit can relieve this stagnation. The proverb says: "Eat lychee when hungry, eat Huangpi when full." In the Fruit Section of *Bencao Gangmu*, under the various fruits entries, only *Haicha Lu* is cited, stating: "Originates from Hengzhou, Guangxi, resembling Melia seeds and small dates, with a sour taste." Its therapeutic functions are not mentioned there; now they are supplemented based on *Guang Zhi*.
It aids digestion, promotes the smooth flow of qi, and dispels summer-heat (*Guang Zhi*). Sour, neutral, non-toxic. It primarily treats vomiting and regurgitation, phlegm-fluid retention, distension and pain in the chest and diaphragm, and pain below the heart caused by ascariasis attacking upward (*Shiwu Bencao*).
Zhao Xuemin notes: Guangdong's *Suoyu* records a fruit called Bai La Zi, which is extremely similar to Huangpi fruit but tastes superior. The proverb states: "Huangpi and Bai La, sweet and sour complement each other..." (Text appears truncated here, implying their flavors complement each other).
*Guangdong Tongzhi* records: Huangpi fruit is as large as a longan, also known as Huang Danzi. The skin is yellowish-white with fine hairs, the pulp is white like fat, containing several green seeds, and tastes very sour and astringent. It is used to relieve the stagnation caused by eating too many lychees.
Resembling Ba Lan Zi, the seed adheres to the flesh, featuring white spots (dimples), is inedible, and can induce illness; northerners call it Hai Hu Tao (Sea Walnut).
Taste is sweet, aroma is potent. It treats deficiency-cold of the spleen and stomach leading to poor appetite, persistent diarrhea and dysentery, emaciation, collapse due to excessive purging, and cases where hundred methods have failed. Use seven pieces of Gan Jian Zi, taken in three doses, to stop the symptoms, followed by regulatory medicine.
Grows in the Min-Yue region. The fruit grows within the tree bark, having a distinct ridged shape, four to five cun in length, sweet taste, non-toxic. It unblocks all vessels, strengthens sinews and bones, harmonizes the middle and tonifies qi, moistens the skin, and improves complexion. *Hua Jing* records: This fruit is five cun long, green, and seedless. *Linhai Yiwu Zhi* records: Yang Yao has seven ridges, the fruit grows in the bark; although the form is unusual, the taste is ordinary, four to five cun long, yellowish-green, and sweet.
