Zhangyan (Camphor Rock) Supplementary Note:
Grows within ancient trees, round like a sparrow's egg, the center is pure white, and the part in contact with the wood shines brilliantly like gold. *Shuying Congshuo* records that a certain filial son's mother suffered from heart pain for a long time without recovery. The filial son prayed to the gods daily for a cure. One night he dreamed of a deity who said, "Your mother's illness can only be cured by obtaining Mu Xin Shi (Wood Heart Stone)." Upon waking, he visited famous doctors everywhere, but none knew of this medicine. One day, while entering the mountains, he suddenly saw two craftsmen sawing wood; the sound of the saw struck him, and he realized the truth. He hurriedly stopped them and explained the situation. Inspecting under the saw, he found a stone, which he took home, ground into powder, and administered with wine to his mother, instantly curing her chronic ailment.
Treats heart pain.
Note: The function of creation dictates that without wind, things cannot be generated; without fire, things cannot be condensed. Therefore, all moving things are born of wind, and all still things are congealed by fire. Observing that after fire dies, the substance remains immortal, we see that wood has a loose and penetrating nature, generated by wind; thus, from sprouting to budding to forming buds, splitting into flowers and fruit, all are dispersed by wind. Hence, flourishing in spring and falling in autumn seems as if it possesses consciousness. In fact, fruits and lipid substances, being static, belong to fire. Fire is the child of Wood; therefore, old trees spontaneously combust. When fire is constrained, it must be vented. The stone in the wood heart exists because wind cannot disperse it, and internal fire is constrained and cannot vent, causing lipid fluids to condense. The most refined over time becomes stone. The rest rot away, such as pine resin becoming amber or cypress resin becoming agate. This is what is meant by "each thing contains a Taiji." The heart is the Taiji of the human body, governing the central palace and possessing extreme spirituality. Treating it with something of extreme transformation allows for harmony and resolution, thus curing this disease. Although specific cases vary, the underlying principles remain constant.
*Shen's Secret Examination*: There is a stone inside the camphor tree, named Zhangyan (Camphor Rock).
Treats heart pain. Can unblock the Five Meridians. Grind into powder and take with decocted wine.
*Yu Dizhi*: In the mountains of Zhennan Prefecture, Yunnan Province, small stones resembling Puxiao (Mirabilite) are found. Locals dig them up, grind them into powder, and sell them. It is said that an Immortal once transformed here, hence the name. *Nanzhao Beikao*: In the mountains twenty li east of Zhennan Prefecture city, it is widely believed that the remains of the Immortal Zhang Mingheng were buried there.
Highly effective for treating all sores and ulcers. Apply powder externally.
Du Changding's *Record of Travel through Cang*: Seventy li from Chuxiong Prefecture to Lühe, there is a Temple of Lü Zu. At the foot of a mountain several li from the village, Xianren Gu (Immortal Bone) is found, crystal-clear, capable of treating carbuncles and furuncles. Legend has it that the Immortal was initiated by Lü Zu. Another thirty to fifty li leads to Zhennan Prefecture.
*Dian Lue*: During the Nanzhao period, two scholars, Zhang and Wang, encountered Lü Xian at Lühe Post Station. Wang was initiated and ascended, but Zhang could not follow and died of indignation. His bones buried in the mountain transformed into stone, clear and lustrous like crystal. Applied to all sores and ulcers, they heal immediately.
