*Yao Xing Kao*: Youyanzhi (Oil Rouge) is neutral in nature. It is prepared by blending pig fat (Shigao), moisturizes the skin, treats fissures, promotes blood circulation, and can be used to apply on smallpox lesions. In the northwest where winds are high and dry, applying it to the face soothes wrinkles and prevents hand chapping; the ancient name "Bu Junshou Yao" (Medicine for Non-Chapped Hands) is not baseless. It is also known as "Wan'er Yanzhi" (Bowl Rouge) because it is stored in small tin bowls. Its color is ruddy like paste.
*Bai Cao Jing*: The method for manufacturing Youyanzhi: Take one cup of safflower juice and two taels of white beeswax, melt them over a gentle fire, stir evenly, pour into a porcelain dish, wait until it forms a thin cake, then roll it hundreds of times with a rolling pin until it becomes sticky like a plaster. Fake versions are made from rouge dregs and are not suitable for medicinal use. Youyanzhi promotes blood circulation, resolves toxicity, treats carbuncles in smallpox, and can be applied for bee stings. According to *Wang Shi Zhun Sheng*, it can be mixed with Zhenzhu Mo (Pearl Powder) for application.
Treating Yanwo Ding (Swallow's Nest Carbuncle) in smallpox: *Jiu Sheng Ku Hai* records that when smallpox first appears, to prevent eye damage in advance, apply good quality Youyanzhi from Linqing or Jining to the outer canthus of the eye.
*Pu Ji Fang* contains Sisheng Dan (Four Sages Pill) for treating ding poison in children's smallpox. Symptoms include pustules that are purple-black and large, or blackened and rotting with a foul odor, or containing a black line within the pustule. Such cases have a mortality rate of eight or nine out of ten. Only the Censor-in-Chief possessed this secret prescription, which is most effective when applied. The formula consists of forty-nine broad beans burned to retain their properties, three fen of hair ash, and fourteen pearls, all fried and ground into powder. Mix with Youyanzhi to form a paste. First, pierce the lesion with an awl, suck out the bad blood, then apply a small amount of the paste. The lesion will immediately turn red and vibrant.
Cracked nipples: Apply Youyanzhi mixed with Hefen (Calcined Concha Tridacnae processed by water levigation). Using Hefen is optional.
Treating eye conditions caused by measles: *Yan Ke Yao Lan* records using chicken gallbladder to mix evenly with Youyanzhi and apply. Even if the eyeball protrudes, it can heal. If chicken gallbladder is unavailable, bullfrog gallbladder can be substituted.
Anciently called "Ji", now known as "Mutao".
Used to treat Xuefeng Chuang (Blood Wind Sores). *Jiu Sheng Ku Hai* records: Burn Mutao Pi (Wood Sleeve Bark) to ash, mix with Dongdan Fan (East Dan Alum) each at one qian, grind into powder, and apply with rapeseed oil.
Huqi (Fire Lacquer) is the residue filtered after dyeing the grease base with Zijiao (Purple Lac) water to make rouge. Zijiao, originally named Zimao, originates from Persia, Chenla, Nanfan, etc. It involves tiny insects resembling ants creating structures on green branches, similar to how white wax is produced. Hangzhou rouge makers use it for dyeing. However, using only Zijiao does not yield a red color; Huangye Shui (Yellow Leaf Water) must be added and boiled together to achieve a bright red hue. The remaining residue is Huqi. For medicinal use, it must be ground extremely fine, and any unground branch fragments should be sifted out.
*Wu Li Xiao Shi*: Huqi is also known as Zijiao (Purple Lac).
Treating Beng Lou (Metrorrhagia): *Jiu Sheng Ku Hai* records: Take an appropriate amount of Huqi, melt it in a clean pot without oil, fry until smoke clears, remove when white smoke rises, let cool, and grind into powder. Take three qian with good wine on an empty stomach. Severe cases require no more than three doses.
Chang Feng Xia Xue (Intestinal Wind Bleeding): *Bu Yao Liang Fang* records: Grind three qian of Huqi into fine powder, divide into thirty packets wrapped in tofu skin, and take with boiling water. Severe cases heal after three doses.
Nine Types of Heartache: *Shen Fang Kao* records: Use only Huqi, burn to ash retaining its properties, take one qian per dose, and it heals upon administration.
