Cantonese records: In the Ruyuan area, white Daphne odora is abundant. It blooms profusely in winter like snow and is named "Snowflake" (Xuehua). It is cut for firewood and burned mixed with plants such as Anemone raddeana (Shanlan) and Ligusticum chuanxiong (Xiong), filling every house with fragrance. The best variety for cultivation has curled branches; those with purple coloration have an even more intense fragrance. When planted among other flowers, the other flowers often lose their scent, being overpowered by the Daphne, hence it is also called "Fragrance-Stealing Flower" (Duoxianghua). The dried flowers are used medicinally. *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica), under the section on fragrant herbs, only recorded its root for treating acute throat wind (Ji Houfeng, acute sore throat and obstruction), using white-flowered varieties ground into water for irrigation, but did not mention the efficacy of its flowers; thus, this is supplemented here.
Efficacy: Used to prevent smallpox (Xidou) and treat early-stage breast cancer (Ruyan).
*Yaoxing Kao* (Study of Drug Properties): Daphne odora flowers are highly fragrant; candied with sugar, they are sweet and aromatic, clearing and benefiting the head and eyes. For toothache, it is suitable to hold in the mouth.
*Bencao Gangmu* included "Ping" in the aquatic plants section, considering this to be the large-leafed Ping. Ancients regarded it as food; the "Ping and Fan" used in sacrifices refers to this plant. Today, people in Zhejiang call it "Ziwu Lian" (Sub-Wu Lotus). It is smaller than lotus, with leaves that have a non-circular notch. It opens white flowers in summer, opening at noon and closing at midnight, or opening at midnight and closing at noon, hence the name. The flowers are harvested for medicinal use.
Efficacy: Treats infantile acute convulsions and chronic convulsions (Ji Man Jing Feng). Decoct in water and take orally, using seven or fourteen flowers per dose. Mr. Zhang Ziyuan's fan shop in Hangzhou has been distributing this medicine to save lives for many years.
*Guangdong Tongzhi* (General Records of Guangdong): Among herbaceous flowers named with "Niang," there is Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Taojin Niang). It grows in clusters in the wild, resembling plum blossoms but with slightly sharper tips, and resembling peach blossoms but with deeper color. The central stem is purely purple, with silk-like stamens deep yellow like golden millet grains, named "Jin Tao Niang." Fruits ripen in August and September, appearing dark blue-black like cow's milk. It is produced in Guilin and is now common in Guangzhou. A Cantonese song goes: "Hand in hand on the south slope of Nanshan, gathering flowers until the basket is full; maternal relatives love to keep it for seeking children, while husbands love Taojin Niang."
*Hua Jing* (Flower Mirror): Hypericum patulum is also known as Taojin Niang, originating from Guilin Commandery. The flowers resemble peach blossoms but are larger and darker. The central stem is purely purple, with yellow stamen filaments emerging from the center, spreading outside the petals, resembling golden threads. Fruits ripen in August and September, appearing dark blue-black like cow's milk, with a sweet taste, suitable for medicinal use. For propagation by division, split from the base of the root, cover with soil again, and transplanting the following year will result in survival.
Efficacy: The flower promotes blood circulation (Xing Xue).
The fruit: Sweet in taste, enters the Spleen meridian, nourishes blood and brightens the eyes.
