*Yao Xing Kao*: It grows in Leizhou and Qiongzhou, creeping with vines, non-toxic. Locals observe its seedlings in spring; if a node is found on one stem, it predicts a storm will occur once. For medicinal use, the nodes-free parts are soaked in wine to treat all types of wind-bi (Wind-Bi syndrome) penetrating into the bone, capable of extracting the pathogen from the body.
It originates from the inner mountains of Taiwan, resembling *Coptis chinensis* (Huanglian), purple in color, with many fine, hairy rootlets, branching like a phoenix's head. Hence the name. The nature is neutral, treating all disorders of the throat.
Another herb resembles soap, originating from Taiwan. Grinding and applying it externally treats ding sores (carbuncles).
*Huo Ren Shu*: Also known as Ghost Candle (*Guizhuzhao*). *Xin Yu* states: Water candle is a herbaceous plant growing in wild ponds, bearing fruit at the end of autumn, resembling a candle. A poem says: "Swayed by wind but casting no shadow, coal-like yet burning without smoke," named for its flowers and fruits resembling candles. Abundant in reed marshes, locals harvest its seeds to stop bleeding from knife wounds.
To treat scrofula (Luo Li): Harvest *Typha orientalis* (Pubao Cao) including roots, wash off mud, cut into inch-long segments. Decoct in a clay pot and drink as tea; effective for both men and women. However, women who take this medicine will become infertile after recovery. This side effect can be resolved by taking 4-5 liang of authentic Yimu Wan (Motherwort Pill) from Beijing.
Wang Lianshi's *Ca Yao Shu*: Pubo refers to *Typha orientalis*. Southerners call it *Shacao*, northerners call it Ban Zhi Hua. Its fruit is called Ghost Candle, and its pollen is Puhuang.
*Ca Yao Lu*: Guishan Cao grows on rock walls. The leaf surface is green with straight veins resembling *Ginkgo biloba* leaves; branches grow like fan ribs. If a person is beaten to death and lies on the ground, pouring the juice of this crushed herb into their mouth will revive them immediately.
*Ca Yao Lu*: Yuxu Cao has green stems and leaves with straight veins on the surface. Each leaf has two rootlets. The root resembles bamboo rhizomes. It treats ding sores and all other ulcers.
Wang Lianshi states: Yuxu vines grow like beans, with bifid leaves containing two internal rootlets. The root is white and thick, specifically treating all surgical ding sores and toxic swellings; applied externally, they dissipate instantly.
*Ca Yao Lu*: Zi Bei Xi Qi grows on sunny slopes of yin mountains, spreading along the ground. Leaves consist of two large and two small ones; the upper surface is gray with straight veins, the lower surface slightly purple. If flowering, vines of one or two chi long emerge, with pointed, opposite leaves. It treats variola toxin (smallpox/toxins). Use one jin of fresh herb divided into two doses, decocted in wine and taken orally; established cases heal rapidly, unestablished cases disappear immediately.
