*Fu Jian Xu Zhi* (Continuation of the Gazetteer of Fujian) records: *Shi Sui* (Stone Marrow, a mineral substance found in rock crevices) is produced in the stone fissures of Changtan, Anxi, Quanzhou. It has miraculous effects in setting bones; treating internal injuries and fractured bones, one should grind three fen (a traditional unit of weight) with wine and take it orally, capable of reconnecting broken bones.
It must not be taken in excess; excessive intake causes bones to enlarge.
Produced in Macau, Guangdong, originating from Hongmao Guo (Red-haired Country, referring to European nations), China uses it as a flint. The outer skin is white like powder and very brittle. Foreigners remove the skin and sell the inner stony material as flint; the skin is not valuable and can be taken by anyone.
To treat wounds caused by metal blades or sharp instruments, crush the stone skin into powder. Its efficacy surpasses that of thousand-year-old *Duan Shi* (Forged Stone, a mineral drug), and it is said to be able to粘合 (glue together) cracks in the skin.
*Fu Jian Xu Zhi* records: Produced in places such as Shuangji Mountain, Yongchun Prefecture. This stone resembles *Xiong Huang* (Realgar) but is loose in texture, with a color like gold. In the commentary on *Jin Xing Shi* (Venus Star Stone) in *Ben Cao Gang Mu* (Compendium of Materia Medica), Liu Hejian’s *Xuan Ming Fang* is cited, mentioning the use of *Jing Jing Shi* (Golden Essence Stone) in eye drops. Li Shizhen suspected this was the same as *Jin Xing Shi*, likely because he had not seen *Fu Jian Xu Zhi*.
It removes ocular nebulae (翳, opacities on the cornea or lens) and brightens vision, used in ophthalmology preparations.
**Zhi Ke Huang** (Pheasant Nest Yellow) - Supplementary Notes
*Liuyan Zhai Biji* (Notes from the Six Studies Studio) records: Wang Cunsai, Grand Master of the Court of Imperial Household, was from Guiyang. He stated: The local area is mountainous and produces *Xiong Huang* (Realgar), some weighing hundreds of jin. Inside, floating sand aggregates into clumps resembling goose eggs, called *Xiong Dan* (Realgar Gall). Breaking it open yields about one cup of clear water. Drinking it immediately eliminates chronic ailments, extending life to two hundred years. However, due to the rough nature of mountain dwellers who handle it carelessly, causing the substance to scatter and become undrinkable, only one person drank it and remains alive today, vigorous as a man of thirty, claiming to be over one hundred fifty years old.
It kills toxins from three types of parasites, cures stubborn diseases, preserves youthfulness, and prolongs life.
*Zanyun Lou Zaji* (Miscellaneous Records from Zanyun Pavilion) records: At the bottom of pheasant nests lies *Zhi Huang* (Pheasant Yellow), whose yellow aura radiates far and repels toxic substances. Villagers search for it extensively in March and April for market trade. The method for obtaining it is: first, pour urine around the nest three times, then dig. The yield is about two to three liang, commanding a price double that of other sources.
There is a fetal sex transformation method from overseas: On the noon hour of the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, collect leaves of the *Jin Zhen Hua* (Daylily), commonly known as *E Jiao Hua* (Goose Foot Flower). Single-leaf varieties are called *Jin Zhen Hua*. Dry them in the shade for later use.
For a woman pregnant for one full month, forty days before the expected delivery date, select a piece of *Zhi Ke Huang* weighing one liang that is pure and transparent. Wrap it in three or four layers of leaves, then wrap it again in cloth and sew it onto the front of the pregnant woman's贴身 (close-fitting) garment against her abdomen. Wait until forty days have passed; upon delivery, she will give birth to a boy, not a girl.
It resolves all snake bites and repels evil spirits and mountain demons.
Commentary: The presence of yellow substance in pheasant nests is akin to certain substances in crane nests, thereby assisting *Yang Qi* (Yang Energy) and preventing gender abnormalities in offspring. *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) contains a method to transform female fetuses into males, using *Xiong Huang* (Realgar) to nourish the fetus, taking advantage of its complete *Yang Jing* (Yang Essence) derived from the earth. Thus, *Zhi Huang* is not solely used for detoxification. I speculate that since the essence of the pheasant has been latent for a long time, wearing it can resolve all difficulties during childbirth, which is particularly suitable for pregnant women.
