There is a surgical treatment method called "Shen Deng Zhao" (Divine Lamp Illumination): Use Cinnabar (Zhusha) and Realgar (Xionghuang), both ground and processed by water flotation; Dragon's Blood (Xuexie) and Myrrh (Moyao) are baked with bamboo leaves to remove their oily sweat, each taking two qian; Musk (Shexiang) four fen. These are all ground into an extremely fine powder. Each use requires three fen of the powder. Roll red cotton paper tightly into strips, about seven cun long, soak them thoroughly in sesame oil, ignite them. The patient must be seated in a windless place. Hold the medicinal strip half a cun away from the sore, illuminating slowly and evenly around the area from outside to inside, with the flame pointing upwards, so that the medicinal qi can enter. The pathogenic toxins will disperse with the fire and naturally will not invade the internal organs. Do not overdo it, lest you damage healthy flesh. When the sore feels slightly warm, the mind and spirit will feel refreshed. Perform this fumigation once daily. Initially use three strips, adding one strip per day until reaching four or five strips, at which point the condition will gradually subside. Then reduce by one strip daily, continuing until the redness and swelling completely disappear. After fumigation, apply the following remedy: Freshly picked herbs (the specific herb name is missing in the original text, likely referring to a local herb like Dandelion or Houttuynia), mashed into a paste, mixed with an equal amount of aged starch (Xiaofen). If in the early stage, add a small amount of finely ground white salt. Form a thick paste, apply it half a cun thick, leaving the center of the sore exposed. The application must extend three fen beyond the halo of the sore to effectively contain the root of the toxin. On top of the sore opening, apply hot water-soaked green onion leaves, torn open and placed on the skin. Alternatively, a plaster may be used, preferably avoiding wind, which will naturally help draw out pus and toxins. If fresh herbs are unavailable, Ruyi Huangjin San (Ruyi Golden Powder) can be used as a substitute. *Jiyao* states: Do not use Shen Deng Zhao too early. If the sore is only four or five days old, with no formed shape and unaggregated toxin, sudden use will cause the toxin to stagnate internally, making it difficult to expel externally. It should be used after eight or nine days, when the sore's condition has stabilized and the toxic qi has aggregated, but before suppuration and ulceration occur. With this illumination, unformed sores will dissipate, formed ones will rise, non-elevated ones will elevate, and non-ulcerated ones will ulcerate. If the toxin has already ulcerated and pus has drained, this method is not suitable. Wash the area daily with pig trotter broth, or washing with scallion head decoction is also good. Avoid triggering foods (fa wu).
This method treats all types of swelling and toxicity, carbuncles, and back infections, capable of resolving toxins, invigorating blood, reducing swelling, and dispersing stasis.
Fire Cups: Available in Jiangxi and Fujian regions. They are fired and sold by kiln owners, sized like a human thumb, with a large belly and slightly narrow ends. The mouth is narrowed to receive the heat of fire. For any condition caused by Wind-Cold, this cup is used. A small piece of paper is burned until it flames, dropped into the cup, and immediately the cup is placed over the affected area. For headache, place it on Taiyang (BL67), Naohu (DU18), or the vertex; for abdominal pain, place it above the umbilicus. Once the cup absorbs the heat and adheres to the skin, it becomes firmly attached and cannot be removed manually; it must wait to fall off naturally. The patient feels a wave of warmth penetrating through the pores. After a short while, when the heat dissipates, the cup falls off automatically. Red halos appear on the skin, and moisture condenses inside the cup. The Wind-Cold pathogens are fully expelled, and no further medication is necessary. It is used to treat headaches caused by Wind-Cold, as well as dizziness, wind-bi syndrome, and abdominal pain.
