Mao Kunlai's family medical heritage includes the "Penglai Fire" method: equal parts of Xihuang (Bezoar), Xionghuang (Realgar), Ruxiang (Frankincense), Moyao (Myrrh), Dingxiang (Clove), Shexiang (Musk), and Huoxiao (Saltpeter). Remove Xihuang, adding Pengsha (Borax) and Caowu (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root processed) is also acceptable. Wrap the powdered medicine in purple cotton paper, roll into strips as thick as official incense sticks, ensuring they are tight and solid. For treating diseases, cut a segment two or three fen long, attach it to the affected skin using sticky rice paste, and ignite it. The disease can be eradicated within no more than three applications. If the acupoints are accurately selected, moxibustion until the medication is consumed will cause the skin and flesh to blister and burst, leading to immediate recovery. Each session consists of three zhuang (moxa cones); severe cases require no more than three sessions to eradicate the disease and prevent recurrence. After moxibustion, pork should be avoided until the wound heals flat; this is a divine and effective formula tested for five generations by the Mao family.
It treats wind-bi (Wind-Dampness obstruction), traumatic injuries, and scrofula (apply moxibustion directly on the affected area). It also treats water swelling, diaphragmatic qi stagnation, and stomach qi disorders (apply moxibustion on specific acupoints).
Collected essential formulas by Zhao: In ancient times, cauterization was used, but it is rarely employed today. Not only do incompetent physicians not know how to use it, but patients are also terrified by it; thus, this method serves as a substitute. The method involves slicing dried Toad Venom (Gan Chansu) into thin slices, drying them over fire, and grinding them into powder. Cinnabar (Zhusha) treated with water flotation, Chuanwu (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root prepared), Caowu (Aconitum carmichaelii lateral root raw) each at 5 fen, and one Silkworm (Jiangcan), all ground finely. Place 1 liang 5 qian of Sulfur (Huang) in a spoon, melt it over low heat, add the powdered medicines, and stir evenly. Rapid stirring is crucial; otherwise, it will solidify. Pour into a porcelain basin, quickly forming a sheet, let it cool, and store for use. When needed, take a piece the size of a sweet melon seed, pointed at the top and flat at the bottom. First, rub the affected area with jujube pulp, stick the medicinal piece onto it, and ignite it with an incense stick, which will produce flames. Apply five, seven, or nine zhuang depending on the condition. After moxibustion, immediately drink half a cup of rice vinegar. Wait for small blisters to form, pierce them with a thread needle to drain a little yellow fluid, cover with a plaster, and the toxicity will dissipate (Note: This formula originally omitted Bingpian (Borneol) and Shexiang (Musk), as noted in the manuscript margin).
It treats wet-phlegm flowing accumulation. For deep-seated yong-sores (bone abscesses), cold-dampness sores and toxins that persist without resolving, and internal ulcers that do not hurt, it can cause unformed lesions to resolve, formed lesions to suppurate, and suppurating lesions to heal. For wind-bi, press with a bamboo chopstick; mark areas of soreness and pain with ink, then apply moxibustion on the marked spots. For leg and knee pain, apply moxibustion to Guiyan Acupoint. For various sores in their initial stage, three to five zhuang of moxibustion will lead to recovery.
