*Wuli Xiaoshi* (Small Knowledge of Physical Principles) records: Luohan Pine has broad leaves and dense petals; when the tree ages, it bears fruit. The fruit is four to five fen in length, flat at the base and sharp at the apex, with a purple-black color. When dried, it can be used as medicine. This was not recorded in *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica).
A monk from Yongning stated: Luohan Pine with long leaves is called "Changqing" (Evergreen), which can bear fruit; those with short leaves are called "Duanqing" (Short Evergreen), which do not bear fruit. The fruits resemble Buddha statues; large ones are like chicken eggs, small ones like beans. They have a sweet taste and are edible.
The sweet taste tonifies the Kidney (Zang organ); its fragrance benefits the Lung (Zang organ). It treats Heart-Stomach pain and greatly supplements Yuan Qi (Original Qi).
Wang Lianshi's *Ca Yao Shu* (Book on Gathering Medicines) states: Luohan Pine is also known as Jin Qian Song (Money Pine) or Jing Song. Its bark treats all types of bleeding disorders and kills parasites causing malaria-like fevers and tinea. It is mixed with Aloe Vera (Luhui) and Sesame Oil for application.
*Wuli Xiaoshi* further records: Produced in Taizhou, the branches hang down bearing fruits like green beads. The fruits ripen once every three years, while new ones grow continuously each year, shining brilliantly among them.
The fruits treat Chang Feng (Intestinal Wind, often referring to rectal bleeding or hemorrhoids).
Pine oil that is black or purplish in color consists of the dregs of this oil. Its odor resembles pine resin; true oil can be drawn into unbroken threads when lifted with a bamboo chopstick.
Killing Bed Bugs: For bed bugs infesting beds or wooden wall panels, apply the oil into the cracks; the bugs will die completely. It can also be applied to treat Tuo Chuang (Tinea Capitis/Alopecia).
Treating Tinea: *Ji Yan Liang Fang* (Excellent Prescriptions Collected for Experience) prescribes: 4 liang of genuine Earth Asphalt, 1 liang of Yellow Beeswax, one gallbladder from a male pig, 3 qian of Mylabris (Ban Mao), and 3 qian of Sichuan Pepper (Chuan Jiao) with eyes and closed ends removed. First, grind Mylabris and Sichuan Pepper into powder for later use. Next, boil raw Earth Asphalt in a clay pot until thoroughly cooked, resembling rising smoke. Then add beeswax to melt into the oil. Pour in the pig bile, remove from heat immediately, mix in the Mylabris and Sichuan Pepper powders, stir rapidly with a bamboo joint. Place the mixture over a basin of boiling water for three days to dissipate fire toxicity. Finally, store in a porcelain jar, sealed tight for future use. Treats various forms of tinea, as well as carbuncles and sores of many years' duration or recent onset.
Apply a bottle of raw Earth Asphalt to the affected area, then fumigate with fire from old, dry mulberry wood. Toxic insects inside will die; stop when improvement occurs. If not cured after one session, repeat fumigation until healed.
Another prescription from *Jing Yan Guang Ji*: Mix genuine Earth Asphalt with Calomel (Qing Fen) and apply. Blisters will form; healing occurs when blisters resolve. Treats tinea and rash in dogs.
*Tong Shou Lu* prescribes: Take an arbitrary amount of Earth Asphalt, boil in an iron spoon, then add pigeon droppings and chicken droppings, mixing them together. Add a little Sesame Oil and rub onto the affected area.
Treating Oozing Sores on Head, Face, and Ears: *Huo Ren Shu* (Book of Living People) prescribes: 2 liang of genuine Earth Asphalt and 2 liang of genuine Sesame Oil, boiled together into a paste. Apply topically for miraculous effect.
Chi You Dan (Red Roaming Erysipelas): *Yi Lin Ji Mi* (Secrets of the Medical Forest) prescribes: 10 Silverfish (Yan You), 5-6 nests of ground spiders (found in old walls of grass houses), Earth Asphalt, and a small amount of lac scraped from old lacquerware. Pound them together, mix with Earth Asphalt, and apply to the affected area for immediate cure.
