Wang Lianshi's herbal prescription records: Jinzhong Bohe (Golden Bell Mint) is the same as Xiye Bohe (Fine-leaf Mint). The roots of those growing in mountainous areas are hard and solid. Grinding them with rice vinegar and applying externally treats bee stings, insect bites, and centipede bites.
Leaves: Treat contusions and traumatic injuries, toothache caused by intestinal parasites; decoct in water and swallow.
Wang An's herb collection prescription: Jinzhong Heye (Golden Bell Lotus Leaf) is Bohe (Mint). It stops hematemesis (vomiting blood), jaundice, contusions, and various wind-pathogen diseases; it can be combined with Jiyin Wan (Ji Yin Pill).
Those produced in Danyang County are of the best quality. Its leaf stems resemble Xiakucao (Prunella Vulgaris), except that the leaves have white hairs. Currently, Phoenix Mountain near West Lake in Hangzhou produces a large amount.
Nature is cold, taste is bitter; it specializes in clearing Liver fire.
Su Mu Hong (Red Sandalwood-like Herb) is also known as Lizhi Hong (Lychee Red), and nowadays called Tou Xue Hong (Penetrating Blood Red). Produced in Zhuyuan, Fuyang, it is excellent for treating sores and knife or arrow wounds penetrating flesh.
It invigorates blood, resolves stasis, relaxes sinews, manages contusions and traumatic injuries, and treats tetanus. It is effective against seventy-two kinds of severe diseases; without this herb, the root cause cannot be removed. Its efficacy surpasses that of Sichuan-produced varieties (according to Wang's formula).
Bashanhu (Barbary Tiger Root) Appendix:
Bashanhu is actually the seed of Naoyanghua (Yellow Azalea). Naoyanghua is Huang Dujuan (Yellow Rhododendron), also known as Shitanghua (Stone Crab Flower); cattle that eat it go mad. It is abundant in the mountains around Bei Nishan and Baiyangxi, Fuyang. Locals call it Shitanghua, which is the yellow variety of Yingshanhong (Azalea). *Baicao Jing* records: The shell resembles Lianqiao (Forsythia Fruit), and the seeds resemble Sesame, hence the name Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame). For medicinal use, take 3 fen per dose; do not overdose. It is included in anesthetic formulas used by Daoist practitioners. Its root is named Bashanhu; only the part after removing the bone is used medicinally. (Wang Lianshi's herbal prescription: Tuliqiao (Earth Forsythia) is Naoyanghua zi (Naoyanghua seed), now called Nantianzhu Cao (Nandina Herb).)
Taste is bitter and warm; it treats Wind-Cold-Damp Bi syndrome, boils and swelling, contusion pain, carbuncles, sores, and malignant tumors, showing miraculous effects. (Wang Lianshi's herbal prescription: Treats contusions and traumatic injuries, invigorates blood, disperses wind, regulates seventy-two kinds of wind-pathogens, and is a sacred herb for surgery.)
Tougu Dan (Bone-Penetrating Pill): From *Yao Jian*: Treats contusions and falls where injury penetrates deep into the bone marrow, causing dull pain, pain worsened by cloudy weather, or chronic weakness in the limbs. This herb is the primary treatment; truly a miraculous formula. Take 1 liang of Naoyanghua zi (Naoyanghua seed), soak and stir-fry three times in Huojiu (Fire Wine/Rice Spirit), soak twice in Tongbian (Child's Urine), and dry-roast. Use Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh) without removing oil, and Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) each at 3 qian. Grind into fine powder and mix evenly. Add 1 fen of Shexiang (Musk) and grind together. Store in a porcelain bottle, sealed tightly. Take 3 fen per dose; strong individuals may take 5–6 fen. Do not eat dinner before taking; ensure good rest before administration. Wash down with wine as much as tolerated. Avoid wind after taking; slight sweating is desired. Avoid sexual intercourse, sour, cold foods, tea, and vinegar. Weak individuals take every five days; strong individuals take every three days. Note: *Jiyun Lvchao* records a miraculous formula "Yizui Xiao" (One Drunk Dissolves) for unnamed swellings, carbuncles, and back abscesses. Use 3 fen of Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame), grind to ultra-fine powder, decoct in good wine for a few boils, and take with the dregs. Cover with blankets to induce sweating; avoid wind. One dose completely dissolves the swelling. Do not use distilled spirits (Shaojiu). This differs from the method in *Yao Jian*; both are attached here for users to choose wisely.
Jiangjun Fuzhan Dan (General Re-battling Pill): From Zhang Yunye's *Suo Ji*: Treats contusions and traumatic injuries. Use 20 liang of Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame), soak four times in Tongbian (Child's Urine), soak three times in Shaojiu (Distilled Spirits), and lightly stir-fry. Use 3 liang each of Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Moyao (Myrrh) roasted to remove oil, and 2 liang of Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) baked. Grind to ultra-fine powder. Take 4 fen washed down with Huojiu (Rice Spirit). Follow with boiled pork to suppress the drug's force; vegetarians may eat firm tofu. After taking the medicine, strictly avoid wind.
Qili San (Seven-Cent Powder): From Wu Xing Yang Family's *Bianyi Liangfang*: Treats metal-blade wounds, stopping pain miraculously. Uses Longgu (Fossilized Bones), Pengsha (Borax), Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) washed in wine, Ercha (Catechu), and Tian Zhima (Heavenly Sesame).
Shiquan Wan (Perfect Ten Pill): From Lüzhutang Verified Formula: Treats Wind-Bi syndrome, contusions/falls, and early-stage carbuncles/sores; one dose causes resolution. However, weak individuals must first tonify before using this attacking formula. Use 3 qian of Shexiang (Musk), 1 liang each of Chanshanjia (Pangolin Scales) earth-roasted until crisp, Guang Muxiang (Aucklandia Root) raw-ground, Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) separately ground, Xionghuang (Realgar) water-triturated, Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame) wine-roasted, Fanmuxie (Strychnos Nux-vomica) earth-roasted until scorched yellow (not too burnt), sifted clean powder; Ziran Tong (Natural Copper) quenched nine times in vinegar, ground fine and water-triturated; Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) roasted, silks and head/feet removed. All above ingredients at 1 liang each. Chu Wugong (Chinese Centipede) with feet and tail removed, 21 pieces, wine-roasted and ground. Form pills with honey like wattle seeds, coat with Zhusha (Cinnabar), wrap in Jinbo (Gold Foil), seal in wax pills. Use one pill per dose. For severe cases, administer another pill. Dissolve in Qianghuo (Notopterygium Root) and Zisu (Perilla Leaf) wine. Induce sweating and avoid wind; otherwise, it may cause tremors and harm. Another formula removes Muxiezi (Strychnos Seed), adds Fengqiehua (Datura Flower) 5 qian, and uses Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame) 5 qian, which is safer.
Maqian San (Strychnos Powder): From *Jiusheng Kuhai*: Treats early-stage carbuncles/sores, internal trauma from falls, and Wind-Bi pain; efficacy is miraculous. Fanmuxie (Strychnos Nux-vomica) must not touch iron. Place in a clay pot, stir-fry with yellow earth until scorched yellow. Pound in a stone mortar, sieve through a fine mesh to remove skin/hairs, and collect clean powder. Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame) de-shelled and wine-roasted, each 5 qian. Ruxiang end (Frankincense) dried on bamboo leaves to release moisture, 5 qian. Chanshanjia (Pangolin Scales) earth-roasted until crisp, 1 liang. Take 1 qian per dose, washed down with wine; do not overdose. Avoid wind after taking; otherwise, it causes continuous trembling. If the person is weak, take 5 fen per dose.
Wuhu Dan (Five Tigers Pill): Treats Wind-Bi syndrome, contusions/falls, and early-stage toxic swellings. Caowu (Aconite Root) peeled, mixed with ginger juice, sun-dried, and stir-fried between papers. Shan Zhima (Mountain Sesame) mixed with shaojiu (distilled spirits), sun-dried, and stir-fried. Xionghuang (Realgar) water-triturated. Xuejie (Dragon's Blood) melted on bamboo leaves. Chanshanjia (Pangolin Scales) sand-roasted. Each ingredient 1 liang, ground to powder. Form pills like mustard seeds. Take 2–3 fen washed down with wine; do not overdose. This formula appears in *Caobao*, and is truly a drastic/potent agent.
