此草
Commonly known as "Tiger Grass," also called "Hunshu Wanni Bang" (Dusk Tree Late-Mother Stick), the stem is red, three to four chi in length, with thorns at the base, and bears yellow flowers in spikes. The insect found beneath its root is highly effective in treating Fengdu Liuzhu (wind-toxin flowing and accumulating). *Bencao Gangmu* records a tree named "Quebuta" (Magpie Does Not Step), which is distinct from this herb.
It has a hot nature, can dispel wind and relieve pain, and possesses the wonderful ability to penetrate the bones. It treats Fengdu Liuzhu, Fengbi (wind-bi syndrome characterized by pain and numbness due to wind-cold-damp obstruction), traumatic injuries, and consumptive weakness. When combined with Baosheng Wan, it acts miraculously for consumptive diseases; it can also induce abortion or facilitate childbirth.
Wang Lianshi's *Caoyao Shu* (Book of Gathering Herbs) states: Bird Does Not Roost, also known as Bird Does Not Step or Cigen (Thorn Root), with white bark, has a warm nature, promotes blood circulation and dispels wind; it treats Ziyunfeng (Purple Cloud Wind), Leprosy, and bone-joint pain.
*Jishi Liangfang* (Good Prescriptions for Saving the World) states: For women in labor, take a large handful of chopped stems and leaves of Niao Bushu, add one qian of Licorice Root (Gancao), decoct with half wine and half water into one zhong, and drink. This facilitates delivery and ensures no illness postpartum. Its leaves resemble apricot leaves, but the branches have thorns, so birds cannot roost on them, hence the name; it is also called Shimici (Stone Rice Thorn).
*Diepu Baicao Jing* (Mirror of Hundred Herbs for Trauma) states: Take one qian of fresh root bark or seven fen of dried root bark of Niao Bushu, add to other herbs, decoct and drink to induce sweating; the effect is excellent.
*Nanchan Jiabao Fang* (Precious Formula for Difficult Labor) states: Use one liang of Niao Bushu leaves, five qian of Licorice Root (Gancao), and two wan of good wine. Decoct until one wan remains. Drink once or twice to deliver immediately.
Zhao Xuemin notes: *Jisheng Kuhai* (Sea of Bitter Life for Saving Lives) records Ci Wutong, also called Wanni Bang, which grows abundantly in mountain hollows, reaching up to about four chi. The bark color resembles mulberry; thin stems are as thick as a thumb, while old ones are as thick as sugarcane. If the root is curved and the bark is purple, it is not the correct herb. Take the root, remove mud, peel off the white bark, crush to extract juice, use two zhong, add one zhong of rice vinegar and half a zhong of clear water, mix well, hold in the mouth and swallow. This can treat unilateral or bilateral Ehou (tonsillitis/parotitis). In cases of Hou Bi (throat closure/blockage), stir the throat with a goose feather to induce vomiting, then hold and swallow as before. Vomiting out three to four wan of phlegm and saliva allows normal eating and drinking. This indicates that the purple-barked variety is not Wanni Bang, or perhaps they share a name but are different substances? I preserve this for further study.
*Guangdong Tongzhi* (General Gazetteer of Guangdong) states: Going up from Xinqiao in Zhaoqing, the area is sparsely populated with many diverging mountain paths, marking the boundary of three counties. Boatmen at this dangerous spot would burn Mengxiang (Dream Incense), causing passengers to fall into a drunken coma, leading to robbery where valuables were replaced with gravel, yet seals remained intact. If a basin of water was placed by the pillow, the narcotic drug would dissipate. Another herb named Pobuye (Broken Cloth Leaf) can antidote this poison. Travelers sing: "Without Broken Cloth Leaf, do not board the Dream Incense boat." According to the annotation in *Guangzhi*: On Dream Incense boats, Hu Man Cao (Stramonium/Henbane) is burned with incense, causing people to become confused and drowsy. Pobuye can antidote the Dream Incense poison and awaken the confused.
*Zhaoqing Zhi* (Gazetteer of Zhaoqing) states: Pobuye originates from Yangjiang, Yangchun, and Enping. It is palm-shaped and green. Boatmen in Lingnan often use incense smoke and toxic water to stupefy passing travelers, using this herb...
