[Appendix on Shell]
In *Bencao Gangmu* (Compendium of Materia Medica), the therapeutic indications for Longan seed mostly discuss its flesh, while the extensive utility of the seed itself is barely mentioned; it only records its ability to treat fox odor (Huxiu), omitting other functions and failing to mention its treatment for nasal sinusitis (Naolou).
*Huangshi Yichao* records: Use Guangdong round-eye (Longan) seeds, burn them in a copper furnace until smoke rises, and use a tube to fumigate the affected nostril with the smoke. After several times, it will heal.
For all sores and scabies: *Gao Zhiyuan Chuan Shi Fang* records: Calcine Longan seeds to retain their medicinal properties, mix with sesame oil, and apply to the affected area. It will heal immediately.
For treating tinea (Xuan): *Zhu Shi Xiao Fang* records: Take two round-eye seeds, remove the outer black skin, crush them, add Realgar (Xionghuang), Sulfur (Liuhuang), Lead Monoxide (Mituoeng), Calcined Alum (Kufan), and Sichuan Pepper powder, each three qian. Dip and rub onto the affected area to heal. *Jiting Fang* records: For tinea, remove the outer black shell of the Longan seed, use the inner kernel, grind it with rice vinegar, and apply by rubbing.
To eliminate spots and promote hair growth: Zhang Jinzhai said: The kernels of Guiyuan seeds should be kept by every household with small children. If there are facial bumps or injuries from metal blades, they can generate flesh and heal without leaving scars; if injured at the hairline, hair can grow back after healing, unlike other medicines that do not regrow hair after healing.
For treating intestinal hernia (Xiao Chang Shan Qi): *Bu Yao Liang Fang* records: Take seven Lychee seeds and seven Longan seeds, burn them to ash, stir-fry two aniseeds, grind them together into powder, and take with good wine to dissipate the condition. *Jingyan Guangji* records: For treating hernia with unilateral swelling and intestinal qi pain, which is highly effective, stir-fry Lychee seeds, stir-fry Longan seeds, and stir-fry cumin seeds in equal parts, grind into fine powder. Take one qian on an empty stomach, delivered with water and wine boiled with one qian of Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma).
Nanzhu Wan: *Zhang Shi Bixiao Fang* records: For treating yin hernia with unilateral swelling and unbearable scrotal pain. Take two qian of purified Frankincense (Ruxiang) free of oil, three qian of round-eye seeds, and two taels of Yellow Beeswax (Huangla). Divide into 108 pills, coat with Arcae Concha Powder (Gafen), string them with thread, expose overnight for storage. When symptoms occur, take three pills each time, delivered with Ruxiang decoction.
For urinary retention (Xiao Bian Bu Tong): Remove the outer black shell of Longan seeds, crush them, and decoct in water to drink. If there is a sensation of collapse after urination resumes, drink Round Flesh (Longan flesh) soup.
For itchy and rotting toe tips: *Yao Jing* records: Burn Guiyuan seeds to ash and sprinkle on the affected area for immediate effect.
For nameless swelling and toxic sores: *Huangshi Yichao* records: Mix Guiyuan seed powder with water and apply; it is effective, can stop bleeding from fractures, and treat metal wounds to eliminate spots.
For throat injury caused by pipe insertion: Wan Jinpeng Yun records: Whenever a smoking pipe accidentally punctures the throat causing unceasing bleeding, remove the outer black skin of the Guiyuan seed, take only the inner kernel, roast and grind into powder. Use a pen tube to blow the powder into the injured area. This stops pain and bleeding and heals, proven effective through repeated trials.
For treating knife wound bleeding: Yin Renzhi Chuan Fang records: Stir-fry Longan seeds, crush, grind finely, and apply.
For axe or knife wounds: Huang Fanweng Yichao records: Take any amount of Guiyuan seeds, burn until charred but retaining medicinal properties, grind into powder, and sprinkle on the affected area to heal.
Note: Chen Jie Huisheng Ji states that Li Zhenzu from Xiping, Daxing, said: Applying Longan seed powder to metal blade wounds saved many people in the military camps of Xiqin and Barkol in the past, yet these deeds were not recorded. This shows that useful materials in the world have been buried beyond count since ancient times.
Longan Shell: This is the shell wrapping the flesh of the Longan fruit, originally dark yellow. People in Fujian feared it would be easily moth-eaten, so they mixed it with Turmeric powder to make it yellow, making it more visually appealing. In Guangdong, Guiyuan is mostly not mixed with Turmeric, so current Guangdong Guiyuan retains its original color. For medicinal use, the shell must be washed to remove the external yellow color.
For applying to burns and scalds: *Xingqie Jianmi* records: Calcine round-eye shells to retain medicinal properties, grind into powder, mix with Tung Oil, and apply to the affected area. It stops pain immediately and leaves no scars after healing, truly a good prescription. *Quanzhou Fuzhi* records: The smallest Longan is called Ghost Eye, and Longan is the medium-sized one; this distinction is no longer recognized today.
