(Utou is the mother plant of Fuzi)
[Indications] Various wind-pathogen diseases, Fengbi (Wind Bi-syndrome) and Xuemi (Blood Bi-syndrome), hemiplegia. Eliminates cold-dampness, unblocks meridians, disperses wind-pathogens, breaks up various accumulated cold-toxins (Li Gao). Tonifies deficiency of Mingmen Fire (Gate of Vitality), treats Liver Wind deficiency (Haogou). Assists Yang, retreats Yin, with effects similar to Fuzi but slightly milder (Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Zong said: To tonify deficiency-cold, Fuzi must be used; for treating wind diseases, Tianxiong is mostly used, roughly like this. As for Wutou, Wu Hui, and Fuzi, they are used according to their material characteristics. Shizhen said: According to Wang's *Jiu Yuan Fang*: Fuzi has a heavy and stagnant nature, warming the Spleen and driving out cold; Chuan Wutou has a light and dispersing nature, warming the Spleen and removing wind. If it is a cold disease, use Fuzi; if it is a wind disease, use Chuan Wutou. Another saying is: For anyone suffering from stroke, one should not first use wind-dispelling drugs or Wutou/Fuzi. It is appropriate to first use Qi-regulating drugs, then use Wutou/Fuzi. Furthermore, whenever using Wutou or Fuzi drugs, it is suitable to take them cold; this is "treating heat with cold" (Re Yin Han Yong). Because Yin-cold is below, and deficient Yang floats upward. If treated with cold drugs, Yin Qi will become more severe and the illness will increase; if treated with hot drugs, rejection will occur and they will not be accepted. Taking hot medicine frozen, after swallowing, the cold nature disappears, and the hot nature immediately activates, and the disease qi follows and heals. Not violating the condition's appearance, yet achieving great benefit, this is the subtlety of counter-treatment. In the past, Zhang Zhongjing treated internal knotting of Cold Hernia by decocting Wutou with honey. *Jin Xiao Fang* treated Hou Bi (Throat Bi-syndrome) by using honey-fried Fuzi, holding it in the mouth and swallowing the juice. Zhu Danxi treated Shan Qi (Hernia Qi) using Wutou and Zhizi. All are applications of "treating heat with cold". Li Dongyuan treated Feng Hanlin's nephew's Yin-excess blocking Yang Cold Damage, with symptoms of red face and eyes, restlessness, thirst wanting to drink, pulse beating seven to eight times per breath, but scattering when pressed heavily. He used Jiang Fu Tang (Ginger and Aconite Decoction) added with Renshen, administered half a jin, resulting in sweating and recovery. This is truly the miraculous skill of the divine sage.
Wu Shou said: Fuzi is a crucial drug for Yin syndromes. Whenever Cold Damage transmits to the Three Yin meridians, or there is Cold Damage with夾 Yin (interior Yin), even if the body is very hot but the pulse is deep, it must be used. Or if there are cold limbs and abdominal pain, deep and fine pulse, or even blue lips and retracted scrotum, it must be urgently used; it has the power to retreat Yin and return Yang, bringing the dead back to life. In recent times, Yin syndrome Cold Damage is often suspected, and people dare not use Fuzi, waiting until Yin is extreme and Yang is exhausted before using it, which is already too late. Moreover, in Cold Damage with interior Yin, both interior and exterior are Yin, and Yang Qi suddenly declines. One must urgently use Renshen to strengthen the vessels and benefit the source; assist with Fuzi to warm the meridians and scatter cold. If these are not used, how can one save them?
Liu Wansu said: Common prescriptions for treating numbness and paralysis mostly use Wutou and Fuzi; their violent Qi can rush open the pathways, so initially the Qi becomes more numb; when the drug's Qi exhausts and Zheng Qi (Upright Qi) moves, then the numbness disease heals.
Zhang Yuansu said: With Baizhu as an assistant, Fuzi is a holy drug for eliminating cold-dampness. Damp-drugs should be added in small amounts as guiding drugs. Also, "benefiting the origin of Fire to eliminate Yin shadows," thereby regulating urination and defecation, Wutou and Fuzi are such drugs.
Yu Tun said: Fuzi possesses a heroic and strong quality, having the aura of breaking through gates and capturing generals. It can guide Qi-tonifying drugs to travel through the Twelve Meridians, to pursue and restore lost Yuan Yang (Primordial Yang); guide Blood-nourishing drugs into the Blood level, to nourish insufficient True Yin; guide dispersing drugs to open Cou Li (pores/skin interstices), to drive out Wind-Cold on the exterior; guide warming drugs to reach the Lower Jiao, to remove cold-dampness inside.
Zhenheng said: For those with Qi deficiency and severe heat, Fuzi should be used in small amounts to guide Shen [Qi]. Fat people have much dampness, and it is also appropriate to add a little Wutou or Fuzi to move the meridians. Zhang Zhongjing's Ba Wei Wan (Eight-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia) uses it as a guide for the Shaoyin meridian; its tonification naturally comes from Dihuang (Rehmannia Root), and later generations mistakenly regarded Fuzi as a tonic drug. Fuzi moves without staying; taking advantage of its vigorous and downward-moving nature, it moves the stagnation of Dihuang, allowing it to reach far. Wutou and Tianxiong both have strong Qi and grand form, and can serve as assistants for lower-body drugs; no one reveals their disaster of harming people, yet they are habitually used as wind-treating drugs and tonics, killing many people.
Wang Lü said: Zhang Zhongjing's Ba Wei Wan was likely established for cases with insufficient Yin Fire. Qian Zhongyang's Liu Wei Di Huang Wan was established for Yin deficiency. Fuzi is a Yang-tonifying drug, not for moving stagnation.
Haogou said: Wutou and Fuzu should not be arbitrarily used unless the body is cool and the four limbs are cold. Taking Fuzi to tonify Fire will inevitably hinder the depletion of Water.
Shizhen said: Wutou and Fuzi are toxic drugs, not used for non-critical illnesses, but adding a small amount as a guide in tonic formulas yields very rapid results. Some people just take a coin-sized dose and immediately suffer unbearable dryness/heat, while ancient people used it as a common drug in tonic formulas. Could it be that the Luck (Yun) of ancient and modern times is different? The Prince Duchang of Jing Prefecture was thin and cold, with no other illnesses. He drank Fuzi decoction daily and chewed Liu Huang (Sulfur), doing so for several years. Zhang Baihu of Qizhou Guard took Lurong (Deer Antler) and Fuzi medicines throughout his life, and at over eighty years old, he was healthier and stronger than usual. Song Dynasty's Zhang Gao's *Yi Shuo* records: Prefect Zhao indulged in wine and women, decocting Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger) and Shu Fuzi (Prepared Aconite) daily, swallowing one hundred pills of Liu Huang Jin Ye Dan, only then could he eat heartily; otherwise he was weak and unable to support himself, living to ninety. Others would be harmed by taking just one pill. These few people all had biased organ constitution, benefiting from it without harm, and cannot be generalized by ordinary principles. Also, *Suo Sui Lu* says: Huafeng's climate is extremely cold, and people eat Fuzi as if eating taro and chestnuts. This is due to local Qi.
