(From *Bie Lu* [Separate Record])
[Correction] In previous texts, the Giant Wasp (*Vespa mandarinia*) and the Honeybee were listed in the same entry; they are now separated.
[Names] Those that are black are named Hu Feng (Giant Wasp) (*Guang Ya*), or Hu Feng (Pot Wasp) (*Shizhen*).
Li Shizhen said: For all things that are black, the term "Hu" is used. The characters "Hu" (pot/gourd) and "Pu" (bottle gourd) in its names are derived from its shape. "Pu" refers to the name of a bitter bottle gourd. The *Chu Ci* states: "The dark giant wasp resembles a pot," which confirms this. There are two types: the Giant Wasp and the Earth Wasp. Tao Hongjing's statement is correct. Su Song considered them to be one type, which is incorrect. However, the medicinal functions of the wasp pupa and the wasp nest are identical; therefore, it is unnecessary to list them in separate entries.
[Collected Explanations] Tao Hongjing said: The larvae of the Giant Wasp refer to those found nesting on the eaves of houses and...
Su Song said: The larvae of the Giant Wasp build nests on house roofs or within large trees.
These wasps are yellow in color and larger than honeybees. According to *Lingbiao Luyi*: In Xuan and Shi regions...
[The nest is] like a huge bell, with hundreds of layers. Locals, when harvesting, wear grass clothing to cover their bodies to protect against toxic stings. They use smoke and fire to disperse the queen wasps before daring to climb cliffside trees and cut off the stalks of the nests. A single nest may contain five to six dou or even one shi of larvae. One should select those resembling silkworm pupae, which are bright white, for medicinal use. However, if one-third of the larvae in the nest have already developed wings and legs, they are unsuitable for use. Based on this, the wasps building nests in trees are likely... species. However, currently in Xuancheng,
the wasp larvae are obtained by digging into the ground, resembling the Earth Wasp. Guo Pu, annotating the *Erya*, stated: The Earth Wasp is a large wasp that builds nests underground; the Wood Wasp resembles the Earth Wasp but is smaller, and people in Jiangdong eat their larvae. Thus, both types of wasps have been edible for a long time. Generally, their properties and flavors are not significantly different.
