(From *Bie Lu* [Separate Records])
[Names] The scum scraped from combs is named "Hundred-Tooth Frost" (Baichi Shuang).
Hongjing stated: The text *Shu* records that head scum floats on needles due to its greasy and oily nature. Currently, one should use the kind that moistens and beautifies the skin; such scum can be formed into pills.
[Flavor and Properties] Salty, bitter, warm, toxic.
[Indications] Treats strangury with urinary obstruction (from *Bie Lu*). Cures yijing (dysphagia/choking disease) by decocting it in sour bean juice to make a paste; recovery is immediate. Also treats laofu (relapse of illness due to overexertion after recovery) (from Hongjing). Treats gu poison (poisoning from mysterious substances or insects) and xun poison (mushroom poisoning); dissolve in rice water or wine and administer orally, stopping when vomiting occurs (from Ming).
[Attached Formulas] Eight old formulas, sixteen new formulas.
Laofu caused by epidemic febrile diseases: Hold one piece of head scum the size of a jujube pit in the mouth; this is effective. (*Lei Yao*)
Preventing laofu: When a patient has just recovered from shanghan (cold damage disease) and one wishes to prevent relapse due to exertion. Burn the head scum to ash, grind it, and make pills the size of paulownia seeds using water. Take one pill with water. (*Waitai Miyao*)
For headache and body pain accompanied by irritability: Take a amount of head scum the size of a soybean, take with water. Fill a bag with steamed beans and apply as a hot compress. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
Pediatric huoluan (cholera-like acute gastroenteritis): Take a small amount of comb scum, take with water.
Xiao'er kuzhu (pediatric infectious disease characterized by crying): Same formula as above.
Various evil spirits and ghosts (referring to mental disturbances or fright): Same formula as above. (All from *Qianjin Fang*)
Women's chuisru (acute mastitis): Use Baichi Shuang, form pills the size of paulownia seeds using wugen water (rainwater or dew). Take three pills per dose. After meals, drink "reverse-flowing water" (water running down from the roof), lie comfortably on the warmer side, and induce sweating for significant effect. Alternatively, mix seven grains of pepper with Baichi Shuang, form pills, and take with hot wine; sweating leads to immediate cure. (*Weisheng Baojian*)
Women's ruji (breast furuncle): Take five pills of comb scum with wine; they will subside immediately.
Women's foot sores, chronic and unhealed for years, known as qinfengchuang (skirt wind sore). Use male head scum, mix with tung oil to make a plaster applied through paper, and stick to the affected area. (All from *Jianbian Danfang*)
Sores on the lower leg: Grind head scum and alum evenly, mix with pig bile, and apply externally. (*Shouyu Fang*)
Gan chan wet sores (genital ulcers with dampness): Fill a silkworm cocoon with head scum, seal it with another cocoon, calcine until red, remove fire toxicity, grind, and apply topically. (Yang Shi)
Xiao'er jin chun (tight lips in infants): Apply head scum topically. (*Zhouhou Fang*)
Vegetable poison and dried meat poison: For poisoning from wild vegetables, various dried meats, horse liver, or horse meat. Contain a piece of head scum the size of a jujube pit, swallow the juice; it can revive the near-dead. Taking with plain boiled water is also acceptable. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Poison from dead meat: Take one qian of scum from an old head towel, take with hot water, and induce vomiting.
Dog venom injuring humans: Mix equal parts of head scum and dog skin, burn to ash, and take one cup with water. If the patient has trismus (lockjaw), force-feed the mixture. For severe recurrence of wounds from dog bites: put a small amount of head scum into the wound, and seal it with hot cow dung.
Snake bites: Take a ball of comb scum, mix with urine, and apply topically. Heat the comb until it sweats, then use it to moxa/compress the area. (All from *Qianjin Fang*)
