[Names] Li Shizhen stated: "Wumingyi" is a colloquial term.
[Collection and Explanation] Su Song stated: Wumingyi originates from Da Shi Guo (ancient Arab regions), growing on rocks, resembling black charcoal. Locals refine it with oil until it resembles stone; when chewed, it feels soft like maltose syrup.
Su Song further stated: It is now found in the rocky mountains of Guangzhou and in Longji Mountain, eight li south of Yizhou. It is dark brownish-black; large pieces are size of bullet seeds, small ones like black stone pebbles. It can be harvested at any time.
Kou Zongshi stated: The shape of Wumingyi resembles stone charcoal, but its taste differs.
Li Shizhen stated: It grows in the deep mountains of Sichuan and Guangdong, with Guilin having the largest production. A package contains hundreds of pieces, which are small black stone pebbles, resembling Shehuang (snake yellow) but darker in color. It is occasionally found in nearby mountains. It is used to boil crabs to remove fishy odors; added to refining tung oil to absorb moisture; and applied to wick lamps, causing the flame to extinguish naturally.
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
Su Song stated: Salty, cold. It can suppress/fix Sulfur (Liuhuang).
[Indications] Treats metal wounds, fractures, and internal injuries; relieves pain and promotes muscle regeneration (*Kaibao Bencao*). Reduces swelling and toxicity of carbuncles and sores; apply as a paste ground with vinegar (Su Song). Absorbs dampness (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen stated: According to the preface of *Leigong Paozhi Lun*: "Wuming stops Chu [pain/toxicity], cutting the finger yet resembling removal of nail hair." Cui Fang's *Waidan Bencao* states: "Wumingyi is a Yang Stone." In the past, people observed a pheasant whose foot was injured by a net. After escaping, the bird carried a stone and rubbed the injured area, leading to healing before flying away. People then took this stone to treat traumatic injuries, finding it highly effective, and thus adopted this practice.
[Attached Prescriptions] Eleven new prescriptions.
Traumatic injury with swelling and pain: Grind Wumingyi into powder, take with wine. This disperses blood stasis in the extremities of the limbs (*Jiyan Fang*).
