(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Collected Explanations] Su Gong stated: Fengliu originates from Yuanzhou. Its leaves resemble those of the locust tree, its stems are red, and its roots are yellow. The seeds ripen in June; they are green and slender. The bark of the stem is peeled for use.
Li Shizhen stated: Su Gong claimed that Fengliu is toxic and originates from Yuanzhou. Chen Cangqi refuted this, asserting that the bark of Fengliu is actually the bark of the current maple tree (*Acer* species), which has an astringent nature and can stop watery dysentery. According to my analysis: *Doumen Fang* states that it is actually an epiphyte growing on the maple tree, and its leaves can also be used to make powder resembling frost. This view is correct. If it were the maple tree itself, it would be abundant everywhere, so why specify that it originates exclusively from Yuanzhou? Therefore, Chen's statement is erroneous. The content regarding Maple Bark can be found under the entry for "Cinnamomum Camphora Resin" (Fengxiang Zhi) mentioned earlier.
[Bitterness and Heat Properties] Pungent, extremely hot, and toxic.
[Indications] Wind pathogens, toothache due to dental caries (*Tang Bencao*). Intractable gout persisting for years, unresponsive to long-term treatment.
Finely chop and roast without limiting the quantity, soak in wine with Borneol (Bingpian) and Musk (Shexiang), and take regularly until intoxication is achieved (*Doumen Fang*).
(From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Bitterness and Heat Properties] Bitter, pungent, non-toxic.
[Indications] Infant poisoning by Gu toxin, characterized by hard abdominal pain, bluish-yellow complexion, and emaciation resembling protruding bones. Take two liang, grind into powder, and administer like tea, four to five times daily (Li Shizhen, *Shenghui Fang*).

[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: This refers to the parasite growing on willow trees.
[Bitterness and Heat Properties] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic.
[Indications] Stabbing pain due to Qi stagnation in the diaphragm. Crush and extract juice, taking one cup (Li Shizhen).
(From *Mingyi Bielu*, Lower Grade)
[Names] Tanpi (*Mingyi Bielu*), Liangwuji (*Bencao Gangmu*).
Li Shizhen stated: Zhansi was called Liangwuji in *Fan Wang Fang* and Muzhansi in *Liu Juanzi Guiyi Fang*. Its efficacy was highly praised, while *Mingyi Bielu* also lists it as Tanpi.
[Collected Explanations] *Mingyi Bielu* states: Zhansi grows in the valleys of Mount Tai. It can be harvested at any time.
Tao Hongjing stated: Li Dangzhi said: It is a parasite growing on camphor trees, where large branches embed into the muscle. Nowadays, people use walnut husks to substitute it, which is not authentic. According to my analysis: *Tongjun Caiyao Lu* states: It grows in Shangluo. It is tree bark, resembling Magnolia Officinalis Bark (Houpo) in shape, white like Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi) in color, with longitudinal and transverse grain patterns. However, merchants today shave it down so it resembles Houpo but lacks the distinct longitudinal and transverse grain. I do not know what this substance is and cannot discern its authenticity.
[Bitterness and Heat Properties] Bitter, warm, non-toxic.
Meng Shen stated: Pungent, neutral, non-toxic. Evodia Fruit (Zhuyu) serves as its guiding herb.
[Indications] Pathogenic factors causing damp bi-syndrome, alternating chills and fever, ulcers and sores, eliminating fluid accumulation and blood stasis, amenorrhea leading to infertility, infantile paralysis preventing walking, various malignant sores and abscesses, stopping abdominal pain, and enabling women to conceive (*Mingyi Bielu*). Treats spleen heat, washing hands...
[Attached Prescriptions] One new prescription.
Muzhansi Powder: Treats back carbuncles, intestinal abscesses, hemorrhoids, breast abscesses in women, and all postpartum masses and tumors, with no case left untreated.
After administration, swelling subsides, pain ceases, and pus dissipates; already ulcerated cases heal early. Muzhansi, Licorice Root (Gancao) (roasted), Magnolia Officinalis Bark (Houpo) (roasted), Asarum (Xixin), Trichosanthes Fruit (Gualou), Saposhnikovia Root (Fangfeng), Dried Ginger (Ganjiang), Ginseng Root (Renshen), Platycodon Root (Jiegeng), Patrinia Root (Baijiang) each one liang. Grind into powder. Administer one fangcun bi with wine, seven times during the day and four times at night; more is better. Upon swallowing, one should feel the medicine flowing into the sore, liquefying it. For carbuncles and sores that have been moxibusted but not yet blistered or necrotic, this is especially suitable. For internal abscesses located upper, pus and blood should be vomited; if lower, pus and blood should be purged. For sores not yet necrotic or for long-term use, remove Patrinia Root. Another formula adds Cinnamon Heart (Guixin) (*Liu Juanzi Guiyi Fang*).
