[Names] Wan Jing (Stubborn Vitex) (*Tujing*).
[Collection and Explanation] Su Gong stated: The stems and leaves of Luan Jing are similar to Shinan, and the branches also curl backwards. It does not die after enduring winter; those with fine black spots on the leaves are genuine. This is what is currently used in Yongzhou. However, Luozhou uses Shijing to substitute for it, which is incorrect. Although widely used in folk prescriptions, it is not recorded in the *Bencao* texts, nor does it have other aliases. There is a plant called Luan Hua, but its functions are different, and it is not the flower of this herb.
Su Song stated: Luan Jing is currently found in Donghai, as well as in Zizhou and Fenzhou. All specimens produced there have white stems and branches, small, round, green leaves that resemble elm leaves but are longer. They do not shed their leaves in winter or summer. They bloom in June, producing flowers of two colors: purple and white. The fruits resemble hemp seeds. The herbs and leaves are harvested in April, and the fruits in August.
Chen Cangqi stated: Luan Jing is actually Muzhing (Male Caste Tree). Its fruits are green like cornel berries. It should not have been listed as a separate entry. Su Gong's claim that Shijing is used to substitute for it further reveals forced interpretation.
Li Shizhen stated: According to Xu Shen's *Shuowen Jiezi*, "Luan resembles Mulan." The leaves of Mulan resemble those of Cassia, which is close to Su Gong's description of leaves resembling Shinan. The illustration provided by Su Song depicts current Muzhing, which does not match the records in *Tang Bencao*. Since Luan Jing was included in the *Bencao* by Su Gong, it should not be an error on his part. It is likely that later generations did not recognize its fruit...
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, bitter, warm, slightly toxic.
Zhen Quan stated: Sweet, pungent, slightly hot, non-toxic. Jueming acts as its guide drug. It is incompatible with Gypsum Fibrosum.
[Indications] Treats Feng Da (Severe Wind disease), various wind-pathogen conditions affecting the head, face, hands, and feet; epilepsy, mania, and spasms; cold-damp bi syndrome causing pain (*Tang Bencao*). Relieves paralysis of the four limbs, unblocks blood vessels, brightens the eyes, and enhances visual clarity (Zhen Quan).
Boiled together with oil and applied topically to treat sores and scabies in humans and livestock.
(From *Xinxiu Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collection and Explanation] Chen Cangqi stated: Shijing resembles Jingthorn but is smaller, growing near water sources. It is also known as Shuijing (Water Jingthorn) in the *Guangji Fang*. Su Song's statement that people in Luozhou use it to substitute for Luan Jing is incorrect.
[Indications] Burned to ash, leached with water to obtain juice, and used to wash the hair to promote hair growth and length (Chen Cangqi).
