[Correction] Merged with Zizhu (Purple Bead) from *Shiyi* (Supplement to Materia Medica).
[Names] Zizhu (from *Shiyi*), bark named Rouhong (Flesh Red) (from *Bencao Gangmu*), Neixiao. Li Shizhen said: Its wood resembles Huangjing (Vitex trifolia var. simplifolia) but is purple in color, hence the name. Its bark is red and reduces swelling, so surgeons call it "Rouhong," and also "Neixiao." It shares the same name as Heshouwu (Polygonum multiflorum).
[Collection and Explanation] Song Bao said: Zijing (Bauhinia purpurea) grows everywhere; people often plant it in courtyards. The wood resembles Huangjing, leaves are small without many branches, flowers are deep purple and lovely.
Zangqi said: This is the Jing tree mentioned by Tian Shi. In autumn, when seeds ripen, they are pure purple, round like small beads, named Zizhu. They are especially abundant in the forests and marshes of Jiangdong.
Zong said: In spring, it blooms with very fine purple flowers, growing in clusters without a fixed location; some grow on the trunk, others attach to roots or beneath branches, extending directly as flower spikes. After flowering, leaves emerge, shiny, tight, and slightly round. Gardens and nurseries often cultivate it.
Li Shizhen said: The trees are tall with flexible branches; flowers are very abundant, blooming two or three times a year. The bark is used medicinally; those from Sichuan that are thick, purple, and bitter like gall are superior.
Wood and Bark
[Flavor and Properties] Bitter, neutral, non-toxic. Zangqi said: Bitter, cold.
Daming said: The bark, stems, and flowers have identical flavors, properties, and functions.
[Indications] Breaks down old blood stasis, treats five types of Lin syndrome (dysuria), taken as a concentrated decoction (*Kaibao Bencao*). Unblocks the Small Intestine (*Dabao Bencao*). Resolves various toxins, treats carbuncles, ulcers, throat obstruction, Feishi (flying corpse) gu poison, swelling and lower genital lesions, snake, viper, insect, silkworm, and rabid dog bites/poisons; all treated by drinking the decoction. Also washes sores and swelling with juice, removes blood stasis, and promotes skin regeneration (Zangqi). Invigorates blood, moves qi, reduces swelling, resolves toxicity, treats women's blood and qi pain, and menstrual stagnation with scanty flow.
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: Zijing has a cold nature and bitter flavor, purple color, and descending property; it enters the Blood aspect of the Hand and Foot Jueyin meridians (Liver and Pericardium).
Cold overcomes heat, bitterness enters the bones, and purple enters the Ying (Nutrient) level. Thus, it can invigorate blood, reduce swelling, promote urination, and resolve toxicity. Yang Qingsou’s *Xianchun Fang* contains Chonghe Gao (Harmony Paste), using Zijing as the sovereign herb, likely deriving from this principle. This formula treats all carbuncles, back abscesses, flowing nodules, and other swellings, regardless of whether the pathogen is hot or cold. Zijing Pi (Stir-fried) 3 liang, Duhuo (De-jointed, stir-fried) 3 liang, Chishao Yao (Stir-fried) 2 liang, Sheng Baizhi 1 liang, Mula (Stir-fried) 1 liang, ground into powder. Mix with scallion soup for hot compress. Blood moves when heated; scallions disperse qi. For sores not very hot, mix with wine. For severe pain, add Ruxiang (Frankincense). For tendons unable to extend, also add Ruxiang. Generally, carbuncles and flowing nodules result from Qi and Blood stagnation; they dissipate with warmth and coagulate with cold. This formula is warm and neutral. Zijing Pi is the essence of wood, breaking blood and reducing swelling; Duhuo is the essence of earth, stopping wind and moving blood, drawing out toxins from bones, and removing Bi syndrome dampness; Shaoyao is the essence of fire, generating blood and stopping pain; Mula is the essence of water, reducing swelling and dispersing blood, working with Duhuo to break hard stone-like swellings; Baizhi is the essence of metal, dispelling wind, generating flesh, and stopping pain. When blood generates, death is avoided; when blood moves, circulation flows; when flesh generates, rotting is prevented; when pain stops, ulceration ceases; when wind is removed, blood disperses naturally; when Qi stagnation is broken, hardness dissipates, and toxins are eliminated. With these five agents treating together, how could the disease fail to heal?
