[Correction] The *Shennong Bencao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) originally appended the Bamboo Borer under the entry for Peach Kernel. It is now separated and included in this entry.
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] The *Mingyi Bielu* (Record of Famous Physicians) states: It is an insect that feeds on peach trees.
Li Cangqi stated: The Mulberry Borer removes Qi stagnation, while the Peach Borer wards off evil spirits; each possesses specific efficacy according to its habitat.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Pungent, Warm, Non-toxic.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Expels evil spirits and malevolent influences (from *Shennong Bencao Jing*). Consuming it promotes physical robustness and brings joy.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Prevents epidemic fevers, ensuring non-transmission. Grind into powder, take with water, one Fang Cun Bi (a square-inch measure) at a time (from *Shanghan Leiyao*).
(from *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Cangqi stated: This is an insect found in cinnamon trees; it is pungent, sweet, and edible.
Li Shizhen stated: According to the *Book of Han - Biography of Nanyue King*, Wu Tao, the Commandant of Nanyue, presented a vessel of Cinnamon Borers. Additionally, the *Daye Shiyilu* (Records of Lost Events of Daye) notes that during the Sui Dynasty, Shian Prefecture presented four bottles of Cinnamon Borers, preserved in honey, appearing purple-black with a pungent aroma and pleasant taste; consuming them eliminates phlegm-fluid retention. Thus, since the Han and Sui dynasties, this substance has been used as a delicacy.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Pungent, Warm, Non-toxic.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Disperses cold Qi (from Li Cangqi).
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats bone splinters stuck in the throat; decoct vinegar, gargle, and swallow (from Li Shizhen).
(from *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Cangqi stated: Tao Hongjing’s commentary on Zhantang mentions: Counterfeit products are made from the feces of Zhe insects. These are indeed the feces excreted by Zhe Borers feeding on wood inside the tree. Zhantang emits fragrance when burned, whereas these feces do not. Since they are dissimilar, counterfeiting is difficult.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Breaks blood stasis (from Li Cangqi).
(from *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen stated: This refers to the larvae of longhorn beetles (Youqi) living within date trees.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats purulent discharge from the ear. Grind and apply.
(from *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen stated: The Bamboo Borer lives in various bamboos, resembling small silkworms. Upon maturity, it pupates and emerges as a hard-winged moth.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Missing.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats "Wax Pear Head Sores" in children. Take those from Cebu bamboo, crush and mix with cow urine, then apply topically (from Li Shizhen).
[Fa Ming (Elucidation)] Li Shizhen stated: The Bamboo Borer is rarely seen in ancient prescriptions. Only the *Xiuzhen Fang* uses it for treating children's wax pear sores... The *Wanbi Shu* records: If a person drinks wine after being influenced by bamboo worms, they will speak the truth. Gao You’s annotation states: Mix three bamboo worms with ten parts bamboo yellow, burn them into wine, and have the person drink it without becoming heavily intoxicated. When questioned, they will surely tell the truth. This method is transmitted from ancient classics; its efficacy remains untested, so it is recorded here tentatively.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats purulent otorrhea and scalds/burns (from Li Shizhen).
[ Fu Fang (Attached Prescriptions)] Six new prescriptions.
Ear Otorrhea (Clear Discharge): Equal parts of bitter bamboo borer debris, Wild Wolf Tooth (Aconitum carmichaelii side root), and Bai Lian (Ampelopsis glandulosa). Grind into powder, mix well, and sprinkle frequently into the ear (from *Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Foul Purulent Otorrhea: Equal parts of bamboo borer powder and rouge base, with a small amount of Moschus (Musk). Grind into powder and insufflate into the ear (from *Zhu Shi Jiyan Fang*).
Painful Ear Pus (due to water entering the ear): Rusheng San (Like-Sage Powder): Use one qian of borer debris from arrow canes, one qian of Nifen (Calomel), and half a qian of Moschus. Grind into powder. Using a cotton swab to remove excess moisture, insert the medicine into the ear, plug with cotton, and allow foul matter to drain. Severe cases will heal after three applications (from *Puji Fang*).
Scalds and Burns: Apply bamboo borer debris powder to the affected area (from *Waitai Miyao*).
Damp-Toxin Sores: Equal parts of dried bamboo borer debris and Phellodendri Cortex (Huang Bo). First, cleanse the area with green onion, Sichuan pepper, and tea soup. Apply the powder once daily.
Toothache: One liang each of bamboo borer debris and Chen Pi (Aged Tangerine Peel). Grind into powder, mash together with Prunus mume flesh (Wumei Rou) until paste-like, and apply to the affected tooth (from *Jiuji Fang*).
