[Correction] Previously listed under a name but unused; now transferred to this entry.
[Names] Sangxie (pronounced like "He").
[Properties and Flavor] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Sudden heart pain, insufficient flesh regeneration after metal wounds (from *Bie Lu*). Hardness and fullness below the chest, effective for treating eye diseases (from *Shu Ben*). Fistula conditions.
[Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Metrorrhagia and leukorrhea with red and white discharge: Burn Sangxie to ash, take one Fangcunbi (a traditional Chinese volume measure) with warm wine, twice daily. (*Qianjin Fang*)
Continuous bleeding after abortion: Take the beetle larvae from within mulberry wood, burn to powder. Take one Fangcunbi with wine, twice daily. The feces of the larvae can also be used. (*Puji Fang*)
Feces (referring to the feces of the mulberry borer)
[Indications] Intestinal wind with blood in stool, metrorrhagia and postpartum dysentery in women, infantile convulsions and congenital tinea capitis, foreign body sensation in the throat due to fish bone impaction (recorded by Li Shizhen).
[Prescriptions] Four new prescriptions.
Intestinal wind with blood in stool: Take the insect feces under dead mulberry trees, heat until carbonized but retaining efficacy (Cunxing), take one Qian with wine. (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Postpartum dysentery, occurring fifty times a day: Take the feces of borers inside mulberry wood, stir-fry until yellow, quickly add water to adjust consistency, and ingest. Continue until cured. This is the prescription of Dugu Ne, Jijiu. (*Puji Fang*)
Infantile congenital tinea capitis: When infants develop sores on the head that spread wherever scratched, it is called congenital tinea capitis. First wash the affected area with scallion and salt water. Then take the debris from borings in mulberry wood, heat until carbonized, mix with an equal amount of Qingfen (Calomel), blend with oil, and apply topically. (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*)
Fish bone impaction in throat: Take the insect feces on mulberry wood, decoct with rice vinegar, and slowly swallow. (*Yonglei Linqing Fang*)
(From *Bencao Gangmu*)
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen said: Liu-du (willow borers) are abundant within willow wood, appearing clean and white inside and out. In spring and summer, they transform into longhorn beetles (Tian-niu).
Previous commentators often confused them with Qi-cuo (white grubs), which is incorrect.
[Properties and Flavor] Sweet, pungent, neutral, slightly toxic.
[Indications] Blood stasis, dripping pain in the waist and spine, blood pain in the heart and abdomen, wind-rash and wind-toxin, corneal opacity (Fu-yi) in the eyes. Its efficacy is similar to that of Sangdu feces.
[Indications] Intestinal wind with blood in stool, postpartum dysentery, mouth ulcers and ear swelling, wind-toxin in the gums.
[Prescriptions] Three new prescriptions.
Mouth ulcers and pediatric wind-gan: For children suffering from this condition, use the feces of willow wood borers, heat until carbonized and grind into powder. Add a small amount of Shexiang (Musk), and apply topically. Feces from other woods may also be used. (*Youyou Xinshu*)
Wind-swelling of gums: Use Banhe of Liu-du powder, Banhe each of Chixiaodou (Stir-fried) and Heidou (Stir-fried), one handful of Liu-zhi (Willow twig), and one Liang of Digupi (Cortex Lycii). Take three Qian per dose, decoct in water, and gargle while hot. (*Yuyao Yuan Fang*)
Ear swelling due to wind-toxin, swelling with bleeding: Take the feces of willow insects, dissolve in water, take the clear juice, mix with a small amount of Baifan (Alumen) powder, and drip into the ear. (*Zhouhou Beiji Fang*)
