(From *Bencao Shiyi* [Supplement to Materia Medica])
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi (Tang Dynasty physician) stated: All spring waters in valleys where jade is found are of this type. When mountains contain jade, the grass and trees become moist; when the human body contains jade (referring to the ingestion of jade-based minerals), hair and eyebrows turn black. Since jade is a precious treasure and water possesses spiritual longevity properties, there is hope for extending life. Nowadays, people living near mountains often live long lives; is this not due to the efficacy of jade fluids? On Mount Taihua, jade water flows down, and locals who consume it often achieve longevity.
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Collected Explanations] Chen Zangqi stated: This is spring water flowing from areas near stalactite caves (Zhongru Xue). People often use this water for drinking or brewing wine, which is highly beneficial. The thicker water weighs more than other waters when weighed. When boiled, salt flowers float on the surface; this is the true essence of stalactite (Zhongru).
[Flavor and Properties] Sweet, warm, non-toxic.
[Indications] Long-term consumption makes the body robust and strong, enhances appetite, keeps the skin moist and prevents aging. Its efficacy is equivalent to that of Stalactite (Stalactitum). (Chen Zangqi)
(From *Bencao Shiyi*)
[Names] Hot Spring (Wenquan) (*Bencao Gangmu*), Boiling Spring (Feiquan).
Chen Zangqi stated: Sulfur (Liu Huang) exists underground, heating the water, which retains the odor of sulfur. Sulfur treats various sores and ulcers, so this water is also suitable for such conditions. At the hot spots, one can cook pigs, sheep, and eggs.
Li Shizhen stated: There are many places with hot springs. According to Hu Zi's *Yuyin Conghua*, thermal springs often emit a sulfur odor, and bathing causes heat to penetrate the skin. Only the Zhu Sha Quan (Cinnabar Spring) at Mount Huang in Xin'an is red in spring, suitable for brewing tea. The Li Shan spring in Chang'an is a limestone spring and does not emit much odor. Although the Cinnabar Spring is red, it is not hot, likely due to Realgar (Xiong Huang). Thermal springs exist in areas with Arsenic Trioxide (Pi Shi), but bathing in them is toxic.
[Flavor and Properties] Pungent, hot, slightly toxic.
[Indications] For various wind-pathogen-induced muscle spasms and contractures, as well as numbness of skin and muscles, paralysis of hands and feet, loss of eyebrows and hair, scabies, tinea, and other diseases affecting the skin and joints, one should take a bath. After bathing, the patient will likely feel extremely weak and exhausted; medication should be administered according to the condition, along with dietary nourishment. If one is not suffering from illness, one should not lightly enter the hot spring. (Chen Zangqi)
[Elucidation] Zhao Ying (Song Dynasty physician) stated: There are hot springs at Mount Lu. Physicians often advise patients with scabies, leprosy-like conditions, or yaws to eat full meals before entering the pool, bathe for a long time until sweating occurs, and then stop. The disease will heal spontaneously within ten days.
