(Recorded in the Lower Grade of *Bencao Bie Lu*)
[Correction] Merged with "Tile Steamer" (Wa Zeng) and "Old Steamer Lid" (Gu Zeng Bi) from *Bencao Shiyi*.
[Collected Explanations] Li Shizhen stated: The Yellow Emperor first invented the steamer (Zeng) and the cauldron (Fu). People in the North use tile steamers, people in the South use wooden steamers, and ethnic minorities use bamboo steamers. Practitioners of Daoist arts say: When a steamer or cauldron makes a sound, one should not be frightened. If a man performs a woman's bowing gesture, and a woman performs a man's bowing gesture, the sound will cease, and no disaster will occur. *Ganying Leicong Zhi* records that tile steamers have a pact with owls; throwing an owl stops the noise. The annotation states: Take an old steamer, write the character "Qi" (Contract) on it, place it on the wall, and throw it when an owl cries; the crying will stop naturally.
Tile Steamer (Wa Zeng)
[Indications] For treating nightmare sleep (Yan Mei Bu Wu), cover the patient's face with it and break it quickly (Chen Cangqi).
Steamer Scale (Zeng Gou) (Also known as Yin Jiao)
[Indications] For treating mouth and tongue sores, scrape the scale and apply it topically (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: In the preface to Lei Xiao's *Paozhi Lun*, it is mentioned: Knowing the location of the sore, apply Yin Jiao orally. The annotation states: Take a small amount of the gaseous scale from the steamer, place it in the mouth, and one can know the origin of the internal organ pathology, reaching directly to the affected area, identifying the pain site, thus enabling treatment.
Steamer Band (Zeng Dai)
[Properties and Flavor] Pungent, Warm, Non-toxic.
[Indications] Decocted juice taken internally removes abdominal distension and pain, rectal prolapse, gastric reflux (Fan Wei), urinary incontinence, urinary retention, stranguria (Lin), Zhong E Shi Zhu (a type of acute infectious disease or mental abnormality). Burned to ash and applied externally to metal wounds (Jin Chuang) stops bleeding, relieves pain, and helps expel blade fragments (Su Gong). It treats constipation and urinary retention, malaria, leukorrhea in women, umbilical sores in children, double tongue (Chong She), night crying in infants, and vitiligo (Bai Bo) (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: In the Jiangnan region, cattail reeds are used as steamer bands, selecting those that have been used for a long time and become rotten. This is because they have been long exposed to steam, thus possessing the ability to disperse Qi stagnation.
[Attached Prescriptions] Five old prescriptions, six new prescriptions.
Urinary Retention: Wash the steamer band with four sheng of water to obtain the juice, decoct two and a half sheng of Malva seeds (Kui Zi), divide into three doses (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Constipation and Urinary Retention: Decoct the steamer band, mix with equal parts of Polygonum multiflorum root powder (Pu Huang) one cun cube dose, take three times daily (*Qianjin Fang*).
Five-Color Leukorrhea: Decoct the steamer band, take one bowl warm, twice daily (*Qianjin Fang*).
Lower Bleeding in Children: Burn the steamer band to ash, apply to breast milk, and let the infant drink (*Waitai Mi Yao*).
Night Crying in Children: Hang the steamer band on the door frame; crying will stop (*Zimu Milu*).
Double Tongue in Children: Burn the steamer band to ash, apply under the tongue (*Taiping Shenghui Fang*).
Goose Mouth Disease in Children: Same prescription as above.
Umbilical Sores in Children: Burn the steamer band to ash and apply (*Zimu Milu*).
Five-Color Carbuncle: Burn the steamer band to ash, mix with egg white, and apply (*Weisheng Yijian Fang*).
Sand or Thorn in Eye: Take one qian of steamer band ash with water (*Waitai Mi Yao*).
Grass or Stone Stuck in Throat: Cannot be expelled. Same prescription as above.
Old Steamer Lid (Gu Zeng Bi) (From *Bencao Shiyi*. Also written as "Bi")
[Properties and Flavor] Non-toxic.
[Indications] Treats stone stranguria (Shi Lin); burn, grind, and take three finger-pinches with water. Also treats night sweats, pain, recurrence after eating (Shi Fu), and expulsion of dead fetus (Li Shizhen).
[Elucidation] Li Shizhen said: The steamer lid has the function of promoting Qi circulation, which seems superior to the steamer band. The preface to Lei Xiao's *Paozhi Lun* mentions: "Bile Dan Lu." The annotation states: Frequently using the lid from an old steamer can make salty flavors bland. This is due to the mutual influence of physical properties.
[Attached Prescriptions] Two new prescriptions.
Dead Fetus in Uterus and Retained Placenta: Take the cooking lid, burn to ash in front of the door, and take with water to facilitate expulsion (*Qianjin Fang*).
Bone Abscess with Bone Extrusion, Recurrence After Healing, Bone Emerging from Hole: Moxibustion should be applied to the sore: Use one black female chicken, remove the meat keeping only the bones, burn to charcoal, and use...
