[Collected Explanations] Zang Qi stated: *Shihua* (Stone Flower Algae) grows in the South China Sea, attaching itself to rocks. It resembles *Zicai* (Purple Seaweed/Laver), with a green color.
[Aroma and Flavor] Sweet, neutral, non-toxic.
[Principal Indications] Promotes water metabolism and diuresis (Zang Qi). Treats wind-constipation (Fengmi, constipation due to wind pathogen), Qi stagnation in the five diaphragms, and Qi knotting below the umbilicus; decocted as juice for drinking. Hu people use it to treat gan disease (infantile malnutrition/parasitic disease) (Li Xun).

[Names] Qiongzhi (Jade Branch).
Shizhen said: These names are derived from their shapes.
[Collected Explanations] Shizhen said: *Shihuacai* (Stone Flower Vegetable/Algae) grows among the sands and rocks of the South China Sea. It is two or three cun high, resembling coral, existing in red and white varieties, with fine teeth on its branches. After soaking in boiling water to remove sand and debris, pouring ginger juice and vinegar over it makes it very crisp to eat. Its roots are buried in the sand and can regenerate branches. A variety that is slightly thicker and resembles chicken claws is called *Jijiaocai* (Chicken Claw Vegetable), which has a better taste. Both species will turn into a gelatinous jelly if soaked for a long time. Guo Pu's *Hai Fu* (Ode to the Sea) mentions "aquatic creatures include yuyao and haiyue, terrestrial flesh and shihua," referring to this substance.
[Aroma and Flavor] Sweet, salty, greatly cold, slippery, non-toxic.
[Principal Indications] Clears floating heat in the upper jiao (Upper Burner), induces deficiency-cold in the lower part (Ning Yuan).

[Names] Houkui (Monkey Kelp).
Shizhen said: According to Shen Huaiyuan's *Nan Yue Zhi*: Houkui is also known as Lu Jiao (Deer Horn). Presumably, Lu Jiao is named after its shape, while Houkui is named because its nature is slippery.
[Collected Explanations] Shiliang said: *Lu Jiaocai* (Deer Horn Vegetable/Algae) grows in the seas of Haizhou, Dengzhou, Laizhou, Yizhou, and Mizhou.
Shizhen said: *Lu Jiaocai* grows among the rocky cliffs of the southeastern coast. It is three or four cun long, as thick as an iron wire, branching like deer horns, with a purple-yellow color. Locals harvest and dry it, selling it as a delicacy from the sea. Washed with water and tossed with vinegar, it swells up looking fresh, with a very smooth and delicious taste. If soaked for a long time, it dissolves into a glue-like state; women use it to comb hair, making it sticky but not messy.
[Aroma and Flavor] Sweet, greatly cold, slippery, non-toxic.
Shen said: Slightly toxic. Men should not consume it for a long time, as it may trigger chronic diseases, damage the waist and kidneys, meridians, qi and blood, causing coldness and numbness in the feet, and dulling the complexion.
[Principal Indications] Directs downward hot wind qi, treats bone-steaming consumptive fever in children. Those who take mineral pills (Dan Shi) can reduce the potency of the mineral drugs by consuming it (Shiliang). Resolves facial heat (Daming).
