[Ji Jie (Collected Explanations)] Li Shizhen stated: Soap pods grow in high mountains. The trees are tall and robust, with leaves resembling those of Dalbergia odorifera (Tan) and Gleditsia sinensis (Zaojiao). In the fifth and sixth lunar months, they bear white flowers and produce pods three to four cun long. The pods resemble those of Caesalpinia sepiaria (Yunshi) but are thicker and fleshier. Inside are several black seeds, as large as a finger, not perfectly round, black like lacquer, and very hard. Inside the seeds is a white kernel resembling a chestnut, which can be eaten after roasting. They can also be planted. In the tenth lunar month, the pods are collected, boiled until cooked, pounded into a paste, mixed with wheat flour and various fragrant substances to form pills, used for bathing the body and face. They remove dirt while making the skin smooth and moist, superior to Gleditsia sinensis pods. *Xianggan Zhi* records that water from soap pods kills goldfish and repels ants; ants do not approach them. This is merely due to their natural properties.
[Qi Wei (Flavor and Nature)] Pungent, warm, slightly toxic.
[ Zhu Zhi (Main Indications)] Treats dysentery and hematochezia caused by wind-dampness, and sores, tinea, swellings, and toxins (Li Shizhen).
[Fu Fang (Attached Prescriptions)] Nine new prescriptions.
Chang Feng Xia Xue (Intestinal wind causing bloody stool): Take single-seed soap pods (charred to retain efficacy), grind one portion into powder, mix with rice paste to make pills; take another portion of powder mixed with rice decoction orally. (*Puji Fang*)
Xia Li Jin Kou (Dysentery with inability to eat): Take one soap pod, fill it with salt, char it to retain efficacy, and grind into powder. Mix a small amount into white rice porridge and consume for immediate effect. (*Qiankun Shengyi*)
Feng Xu Ya Zhong (Wind-deficiency tooth swelling): Elderly people with kidney deficiency may experience tooth pain due to using cooling herbs to brush teeth. Use single-seed soap pods filled with green salt, char to retain efficacy, grind into powder, and apply to the affected area. Alternatively, add fifteen wen of raw borneol. (*Weisheng Jiabao Fang*)
Tou Er Zhu Chuang, Mei Xuan, Yan Wo Chuang (Various sores of the head and ears, eyebrow tinea, swallow's nest sore): Use one qian of soap pods (charred to retain efficacy) and one fen of alum. Grind uniformly, mix with sesame oil, and apply topically. (*Zhai Xuan Fang*)
Xiao'er Tou Chuang (Pediatric head sore): Suppurative sores caused by scalding with hot water or soup, with continuous discharge. Char soap pods to retain efficacy, mix with calomel (Nifen), blend with hemp seed oil, and apply. (*Hai Shang Fang*)
La Li Tou Chuang (Wax-pear head sore), regardless of adult or child: Take single-kernel soap pods (remove kernel, fill with rock sugar, insert two Croton seeds, tie tightly, wrap in salt mud, char to retain efficacy). Mix with Areca catechu (Binglang) and calomel (Qingfen) five to seven fen. Grind uniformly, blend with sesame oil, and apply. First wash with ash lye, then rinse with warm water, dry thoroughly before application. Effective overnight, no need to wash again. (*Puji Fang*)
Xuan Chuang Bu Yu (Refractory tinea): Decoct Sophora flavescens root bark (Chuanjin Pi) in water. Immerse soap pods (remove kernel and inner membrane) in the decoction and apply frequently. (Yang Qi, *Jianbian Fang*)
Bian Du Chu Qi (Initial stage of bubo): Pound soap pods into a paste and apply topically; highly effective. (*Jianbian Fang*)
Yu Jing Shi Yang (Moisture and itching of the penis): Take one soap pod. Char to retain efficacy, blend with sesame oil, and apply for cure. (*Shesheng Fang*)
