[Names] Ge Gu Lu Ze.
Li Shizhen says: Its nature, flavor, and efficacy are similar to Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), hence the name. "Ge Gu Lu Ze" is a Hu (foreign/northern ethnic) term!
[Collection and Explanation] Su Gong says: Huhuanglian (Picrorhizae Rhizoma) originates from Persia, growing on land by the sea. The seedlings resemble Lixingkcao (Prunella vulgaris), the root head resembles a bird's beak, and those that, when broken, show an internal texture resembling the eye of a Yu bird (a type of dove/pigeon), are of good quality. It is harvested in early August. Song says: It is also found now in Nanhai and between Qin and Long regions. When newly sprouted, it resembles reeds; when dried, it resembles withered willow branches, with a black interior and yellow exterior. It can be harvested at any time. Cheng says: Those that emit dust like smoke when broken are genuine!
