Pediatric dysentery characterized by passage of both blood and mucus for an extended period, with the child's constitution too weak to endure standard treatments. Various types of dysentery, spleen deficiency diarrhea, and internal toxin bleeding: Take half a jin (approx. 500g) of Yazhou Huanglian (Coptis chinensis), remove the root hairs, cut into pieces, and pack them inside a large intestine of a fat pig. Tie both ends securely, place in a clay pot, and boil thoroughly with water and wine. Remove the Coptis, dry it by roasting, grind into powder, mash the pig intestine, and mix with the powder to form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take 100 pills per dose, washed down with rice gruel; extremely effective. (From *Zhizhi Fang*)
Damp dysentery and intestinal wind bleeding: Bian Tong Wan (Variation Pill) from *Bai Yi Xuan Fang*: Treats bloody and mucoid dysentery occurring day and night without restraint, as well as intestinal wind bleeding. Take Chuan Huanglian (Coptis chinensis, root hairs removed) and Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in hot water) each two liang (approx. 60g). Stir-fry together until fragrant, separate them, and grind each into powder respectively. Mix with millet rice flour to form pills the size of a wutong seed, storing them separately. Take 30 pills per dose: for bloody dysentery, take the Huanglian pill with licorice decoction; for mucoid dysentery, take the Wuzhuyu pill with ginger decoction; for mixed bloody and mucoid dysentery, take 15 pills of each with rice gruel. This is a formula from Shan Chunlao in western Zhejiang, highly effective in saving lives. Wu Ji Wan (Wu Ji Pill) from *Ju Fang*: Treats dampness affecting the spleen and stomach, resulting in dysentery with abdominal pain and undigested food in stool. Add Baishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) to the previous two ingredients, stir-fry together, grind, and mix with steamed dough to form pills.
Accumulated heat causing bleeding: Ju Jin Wan (Gathering Metal Pill): Treats accumulated heat in the intestines and stomach, or bleeding due to alcohol toxicity, accompanied by abdominal pain, thirst, and a wiry-rapid pulse. Take four liang (approx. 120g) of Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), divide into four parts, and make pills the size of a wutong seed using paste. Take 50 pills per dose before meals, washed down with water infused with Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus) soaked in rice wash. In winter, add one liang (approx. 30g) of Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) steamed in wine. (From *Yang Shi Jia Cang Fang*)
Internal toxin bleeding: Grind Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) into powder. Roast a single-clove garlic until soft, mash it, and mix with the powder to form pills the size of a wutong seed. Take 40 pills on an empty stomach, washed down with aged rice drink. (From *Ji Sheng Fang*)
Hemorrhoids caused by alcohol bleeding: Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), soaked in wine and cooked thoroughly, ground into powder. Make pills the size of a wutong seed using wine paste. Dig a pit in the ground one chi (approx. 30cm) deep, line the bottom with tiles, place four liang (approx. 120g) of prepared Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) on the tiles, and ignite it. Cover the medicine bowl upside down over the pit, seal the edges with mud, leave a hole for smoke to escape completely, then scrape off the collected residue. Form pills the size of a soybean. Take ten pills per dose with sweet bamboo leaf decoction.
