(From *Tang Bencao*)
[Names] Suxmu.
Li Shizhen stated: There is a country named Sufang overseas, where this wood is produced, hence the name. People now abbreviate it as Suxmu.
[Collected Explanations] Su Gong stated: Sufangmu comes from Nanhai and Kunlun regions, and it is also found in Jiaozhou and Aizhou. The tree resembles an Anluo tree; its leaves are like elm leaves but without astringency. The branches grow to be about one zhang long. The flowers are yellow, and the fruits are green when young and black when ripe. This wood is used by people to dye crimson red.
Chen Zangqi stated: According to Xu Biao's *Nanzhou Ji*: It grows by the sea.
The leaves resemble Jiangse (a plant), and the wood resembles Ligustrum lucidum.
Li Shizhen stated: According to Ji Han's *Nanfang Caomu Zhuang*: The Sufang tree resembles a locust tree, with yellow flowers and black seeds, originating from Jiuzhen Commandery. When decocting the juice, iron vessels must be avoided, otherwise the color will become dull. The feces of insects boring into the wood are called "Zina" and can also be used. People in Siam use it cheaply as firewood.
[Processing] Chen Zangqi stated: When using this herb, remove the coarse bark on the upper part and the nodes. If the center grain is transverse like a purple horn, it is called "Muzhongzun," and its efficacy is a hundred times greater than usual. It must be finely chopped and heavily pounded, mixed with fine plum branch twigs, steamed from Si hour to Shen hour, and then dried in the shade for use.
[Flavor and Nature] Sweet, salty, neutral, non-toxic.
Wang Haogu stated: Sweet, salty, cool. It can ascend and descend, belonging to Yin within Yang.
Li Gao stated: Flavor is sweet with slight sourness and pungency; nature is neutral.
[Indications] Breaks blood stasis. For postpartum abdominal distension and suffocation resembling death: decoct five liang in water, take the concentrated juice orally (*Funren Liangfang*). Treats women's blood qi heart and abdominal pain, irregular menstruation, and postpartum consumptive disease; expels pus, relieves pain, reduces carbuncles and swelling, resolves blood stasis from trauma; treats women's aphonia and blood jing, dysentery with red and white discharge, and acute pain in the posterior orifices (Daming). For deficiency consumption with blood stasis and qi stagnation, unstable lochia postpartum, twisting pain in the heart and abdomen, and meridian obstruction; stroke in men and women with locked jaw and inability to speak. All should use one fangcun bi of finely ground Boswellia carterii powder, decoct Suxmu in wine, mix and take orally; immediately vomit out evil substances and recover (*Haiyao Bencao*). Cholera with vomiting and regurgitation, and frequent vomiting in general: decoct in water and take orally (Cangqi). Breaks dead blood in sores and ulcers, postpartum敗血 (defeated blood).
[Elucidation] Zhang Yuansu stated: Suxmu is cool in nature and slightly pungent in flavor. It disperses wind qi in the exterior and interior, making it suitable for use with Fangfeng. It can also break dead blood, making it suitable for postpartum blood stasis causing severe swelling and fullness resembling death.
[Attached Prescriptions] One old prescription, five new prescriptions.
