Hematuria and stranguria (blood stranguria): Burn lotus calyx (lotus pod) until carbonized but retaining its nature, grind into powder, add a small amount of Moschus (musk). Take 2.5 qian each time, mixed with rice water for administration, twice daily. (*Experienced Prescriptions*)
Tianpao damp sores: Burn lotus seedpod shell until carbonized but retaining its nature, grind into powder, mix with well mud and apply topically; extremely effective. (*Sea Upper Prescriptions*)
He Ye (Lotus Leaf)
[Names]: The tender ones are called He Qian (Lotus Coin) due to their shape resembling coins. Those lying flat on the water are called Ou He (Lotus producing lotus root). Those emerging from water to produce flowers are called Ji He (Lotus producing flowers). The stalk is named He Bi (Lotus Nose).
[Preparation]: Da Ming states: For medicinal use, they must be roasted.
[Favor and Toxicity]: Bitter in flavor, neutral in nature, non-toxic.
Shizhen states: It fears Tung oil. Its efficacy is inhibited by Silver and Sulfur.
[Indications]: Stops thirst, expels retained placenta, breaks blood stasis, treats postpartum dry mouth and restlessness of the heart and lungs (Da Ming). Treats abdominal distension and pain due to blood accumulation, and failure to expel the placenta after childbirth; decoct with wine and take. He Bi (Lotus Stalk): Calms the fetus, removes bad blood, retains good blood, stops bloody dysentery, neutralizes mushroom toxins; all taken as a decoction in water (Zangqi). Generates primordial qi, assists the spleen and stomach, astringes seminal emission, disperses blood stasis, reduces edema and carbuncles, promotes the eruption of smallpox, treats hematemesis, expectoration of blood, epistaxis, lower bleeding, hematuria, blood stranguria, metrorrhagia, postpartum lochia retention, and敗血 (bad blood) resulting from trauma (Shizhen).
[Elucidation]:
Gao states: Jiegu Zhang Xiansheng orally transmitted the prescription for Zhizhu Wan (Bitter Orange and Atractylodes Macrocephala Pill), using lotus leaf steamed rice to form pills. At that time, its rationale was not understood; only in old age did I comprehend it. Zhen represents movement. Humans receive this qi to generate the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder channel, which belongs to Wind-Wood, the root of generating and transforming all things. When food enters the stomach, Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi) moves upward, which is the qi of the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder, together with the Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Yuan Qi (Source Qi), both being Shengfa Qi (generating and ascending qi). *Suwen* states: "Start correctly, and the order will not err." Lotus leaves grow beneath the water and soil, amidst filth, yet stand tall and independent. Their color is green, their form faces upward, and their interior is hollow, symbolizing the structure of the Zhen trigram. Food and medicine sense the transformation of this qi; how can Stomach Qi fail to ascend? Using this as a guiding agent demonstrates foresight and alignment with the Dao. Furthermore, combining it with steamed rice and herbs cooperates with Baizhu (Atractylodes macrocephala) to nourish and thicken Stomach Qi, preventing internal injury...
Shizhen states: See the section on Fan (Rice) under Gu Bu (Grains) for the method of making steamed rice. Note: *Dongyuan Shi Xiao Fang* states: Leitou Feng (Thunder Head Wind) syndrome involves swelling and pain of lumps on the head and face, aversion to cold, fever, resembling Taiyang disease. The pathology is in the Three Yang channels; one should not overuse heavy cold medicines to punish without fault. One person suffered from this, and various medicines were ineffective. I prescribed Qingzhen Tang (Clear Thunder Decoction) and he recovered. Use one He Ye (Lotus Leaf), 5 qian Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), 5 qian Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), decoct in water and take warm. Essentially, Zhen represents thunder, and the image of the lotus leaf corresponds to the Zhen structure; its color is also green, adhering to the principle of analogical imagery. Another note: Wenren Gui's *Douzhen Bashiyi Lun* states: If smallpox has erupted but is attacked by wind-cold externally, the pores close and blood coagulates, causing spots not to grow or turning black. This is called Daodie (inverted eruption), accompanied by body pain and slight coldness of the limbs. Only by warming the muscles and dispersing pathogens can the heat qi resume circulation, allowing spots to emerge naturally. Zi Bei He Ye San (Purple-backed Lotus Leaf Powder) is suitable. This is because He Ye can raise Yang Qi, disperse blood stasis, and retain good blood, while Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) resolves stagnant qi. This medicine is easy to obtain and saves many lives, surpassing Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis) and Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum). Dai Yuanli's *Zhengzhi Yaojue* states: Taking He Ye makes people thin; thus, taken alone, it can resolve the qi stagnation of Yang Water edema.
